Brie Larson to Join Superhero Big Leagues as Captain Marvel

Marvel Studios has traditionally used San Diego Comic-Con as the perfect platform to announce exciting new films, and this year was no exception. Although announcements for a Black Panther film and a second Guardians of the Galaxy picture were met with much enthusiasm, one of the biggest announcements from Marvel Studios was the naming of Brie Larson as the cinematic universe’s Captain Marvel.

Originally an Air Force Security Chief, the fictional Carol Danvers took up the mantle of Captain Marvel in 2012. Since then, the character has been immensely popular not just within the context of the Marvel universe, but to real-world comic book fans worldwide. She has been likened to a feminist icon and arguably one of the most powerful Avengers – so no pressure Larson.

Though it was revealed last year that Joss Whedon had intended to have a Captain Marvel cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios President, later explained that the decision not to include Carol was made out of cautiousness. With such an important and well-loved character, the studio decided not to rush her debut.

Not to worry though, Danvers fans! Instead, Brie Larson’s iteration of Captain Marvel will make her first big-screen appearance in the Russo brothers’ Avengers: Infinity War on May 4, 2018. Followed up by her solo film Captain Marvel in 2019 and the second half of Infinity War later that same year, one of our favorite superheroines is sure to get plenty of screen time.

As an actress, Larson’s work spans multiple genres and character types. While Ms. Larson is best known for her performance in Room (for which she won an Academy Award), she also knows a thing or two about comic book adaptations, having appeared as Envy Adams in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. Overall, hers seem like the perfect hands in which to place all of our hopes for the silver-screen Captain Marvel.

Do you love Brie Larson as the big-screen Carol Danvers? What other comic book characters would you want to see join the cinematic universe? Tell us in the comments!
