If this rumor is true, Thor: Ragnarok is about to get a serious dose of Australian celebrity royalty.
According to Variety, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett is in talks to join the film.
Yes, you read that right. Cate. Blanchett. Honestly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be so lucky to get her.
There’s no word yet on who she’ll be playing but my co-workers and I have already decided she should play Hela, a Marvel villain based on the Norse goddess of death, Hel. In the comics, she rules over the dead in the realms Hel and Niffleheim.
She also happens to plot with Loki to try and bring about Ragnarok. So. There’s that too.
Thor is absolutely the right Marvel property for Blanchett, as she’s practically already an ethereal being here on Earth. And while this would be her first foray into the superhero world, she’s no stranger to big franchises – she was in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.
I’m one of those fans that’s firmly in the Thor camp, and didn’t really enjoy Thor: The Dark World. But the more I hear about Ragnarok, the more excited I get. I want this movie to dive fully into the mythology, and explore more of these rich characters, like Thor and Loki and Sif and the Warriors 3 (and also hopefully introduce Valkyrie). And this is what I hope the inclusion of Hulk doesn’t detract from.
Thor: Ragnarok, directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Jaimie Alexander, and hopefully many other familiar faces, is set to hit theaters on November 3, 2017.
Are you excited to potentially see Cate Blanchett in this film? Do you hope she’ll play Hela or someone else? Let us know in the comments!
