Daredevil’s Punisher Compared to Travis Bickle in First Official Photo

Thank goodness for Entertainment Weekly, right?

Yesterday they gave us our first official look at Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and today we get even more from the powerful entity that is Marvel Studios.

Check out your first look at Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in Season 2 of Daredevil!

Things don’t seem to be looking up for our hero in this still.

In visiting the set, EW was able to interview showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez to find out more about this fan-favorite character appearing in the series. And he’ll appear fast, as he’s set for an introduction in the first episode.

Petrie explains how Punisher will be relevant as a character:

“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves. Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky shit. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police, you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”

This isn’t surprising, given the numerous thinkpieces about morals and themes that both Season 1 of Daredevil and Jessica Jones spawned. But it’s good to read they’re still committed to making hard-hitting television that confronts big ideas.

Ramirez goes on to compare Punisher to Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver which in my mind is already a step in the right direction.

Determined to get this right for the fans, Bernthal walked alone for months “to the Daredevil set across the Brooklyn Bridge to help get into Castle’s isolated and joyless headspace.”

It’s obvious that Punisher is one of the most anticipated aspects of Daredevil Season 2, but the trick will be having his character not overshadow Daredevil’s the way Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk did in Season 1. Speaking of, when is he coming back?

Season 2 will air sometime next year on Netflix and see the return of supporting characters like Foggy and Karen, as well as another fan-favorite, Elektra.

Are you excited to see Punisher in Season 2? What do you think of this first look? Sound off in the comments!
