Deadpool is officially out in theaters, and it’s sure to be a smashing success (it’s certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) – which is why 20th Century Fox is already working on the sequel.
One of the names that has come up frequently in discussions of a Deadpool sequel is Cable.
Cable is the time-traveling son of Cyclops and and Madelyne Pryor (a clone of Jean Grey), and he had a successful ongoing comic with Deadpool called Cable & Deadpool, which ran from 2004 and 2008.
They’re two characters who are inextricably linked to each other, and popular with fans as well. It’s no surprise that people want to see him in a Deadpool film and the creators at Fox seem to know that.
Last fall, director Tim Miller (who isn’t confirmed to direct the sequel, but probably will) went on record to say: “If we don’t put Cable in Deadpool 2 I think we’ll be run out of town on a rail.”
It was a promising quote at the time, but all talk. Now, however, there’s real reason to believe Cable will actually be in the sequel.
WARNING: Spoilers for Deadpool below.
There are two post-credit scenes in this weekend’s film. The first is more for movie fans, but the second is for comic fans and, specifically, Cable fans. He’s not actually seen in the clip, but it’s obvious that he’ll have a role in the sequel.
Cable is a clear and good choice for the sequel, and his dynamic with Deadpool is already set up to be a hit. Plus, his introduction could easily lead into a tie-in with the X-Force movie that’s currently in pre-production.
