With Doctor Who gearing up for its fall return, Whovians everywhere are speculating about what’s set to happen and who will return.
Peter Capaldi reprises his role as the Doctor with Jenna-Louise Coleman returning as Clara Oswald. Of course, after the Christmas special “Last Christmas,” it’s not surprising to see Coleman returning. She and Capaldi share a compelling dynamic as the Doctor struggles with his faltering sense of self.
What’s equally thrilling is Michelle Gomez’s return as Missy (a.k.a. The Master)! Capaldi’s first season ended with the unmasking of the newest iteration of the Master and we couldn’t be too sure that she would come back to the show.
Michelle Gomez said, “Things have been a little beige since I left Missy behind, so I’m delighted to be putting my lippie back on. I’m positively dying to see The Doctor again!”
After tumultuous events in Capaldi’s first season and the dynamic between Missy and the Doctor, we’re thrilled to see Michelle Gomez return. The Master has been the Doctor’s arch-nemesis since the show began in the 1960s. Despite the seeming “deaths” of the Master over the years, the Master – well, now the Mistress – always finds a way back to the Doctor. We’ll just have to see how Missy returns next.
Even Steven Moffat is thrilled to have Missy back: “Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year, so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener. But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.”
The season premiere will be a two-parter, “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar,” with both episodes penned by showrunner Steven Moffat.
The guest cast for the upcoming season includes Jemma Redgrave (Kate Lethbridge-Stewart in “The Day of the Doctor,” “Dark Water,” and “Death in Heaven”), Daniel Hoffmann-Gill, Jami Reid-Quarrell, Aaron Neil, India Ria Amarteifio, Joey Price, Dasharn Anderson, Harki Bhambra, Demi Papaminas, Kelly Hunter, Clare Higgins, and Jay Griffiths.
