Doctor Who Star Matt Smith Joins the Cast of Star Wars: Episode IX

According to several sources, the Eleventh Doctor has been cast in a “key role” in the upcoming, and still untitled, Star Wars: Episode IX.

Matt Smith, the Emmy-nominated star of The Crown and Doctor Who, has joined the cast of J.J. Abrams’ next installment in the Skywalker Saga, which includes some familiar faces – Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Adam Driver, Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, and Mark Hamill – as well as new cast members – Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Naomi Ackie, and Dominic Monaghan.

It’s still unclear what Smith’s role will be. Sources told Variety, “it’s unknown at this time whether the Doctor Who alum will be on the side of the rebels or the evil empire.”

Episode IX filming is currently underway in the UK and should premiere December 20, 2019.
