Emma Stone Might Play a Young Cruella de Vil in Live-Action Origin Film

Add one of Disney’s scariest villains, Cruella de Vil, to the list of their upcoming live-action films.

The film, simply titled Cruella, is meant to be an origin story. Kelly Marcel, who previously wrote Saving Mr. Banks, is working on the script.

Now thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we know who’s in talks to play the sadistic fur-lover: Hollywood darling Emma Stone.

This will be the second of Disney’s villains to get a live-action origin story. The first was 2014’s Maleficent, which split critics, but, despite needing some tightening in its second act, was a triumph in its brave revisionism.

However, you can’t just give Cruella de Vil a revised, heroic origin story like that. Killing puppies for their fur is not exactly the same as pricking a teenage girl’s finger.

Which just makes me curious for what exactly they’re planning to do with this film. And if anything else, Stone certainly has some big shoes to fill because Glenn Close’s performance in the 1996 live-action 101 Dalmatians was great.

Cruella has no director, but the studio is hoping to start shooting later this year.
