Check Out the First Image of Michael Fassbender in Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed is the movie that’s been in production for ages. It’s been easy to assume that perhaps it wouldn’t happen at all.

But it is happening and now we have proof.

Thanks to Yahoo! Movies, we have our first look at Michael Fassbender’s protagonist, Callum Lynch:

The costume looks great, with Fassbender’s piercing eyes peering out from underneath the hood. It’s in the same style as the video game series, with a really great texture.

If you did a double-take at the character name, though, you’re not alone. It turns out the studio and creative team have created an entirely new character to headline their film. This might make fans hesitate but provided the aesthetic, tone, and ethics of the story stay intact, it should be fine. After all, creating a new but similar protagonist could simply be a way to make the film more accessible to a wider audience.

Here’s the synopsis, courtesy of Yahoo!:

“Lynch discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day.”

Fassbender’s one of the greatest actors of our time, so there’s no doubt he’ll do something compelling with the role. He’ll be directed by Justin Kurzel, who just happened to also direct him in this year’s Macbeth alongside Marion Cotillard – who will also be in Assassin’s Creed. Hey, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it.

Assassin’s Creed is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2016. It will also star Michael Kenneth Williams and Ariane Labed.
