Marvel and FX are quickly moving ahead with their X-Men show Legion.
This is one of two X-Men shows in production and follows the character David Haller (Charles Xavier’s son in the comics) who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia. However, when he has a strange encounter with another patient, it comes to light that the voices he hears and visions he sees might not just be in his head after all.
Now the show has found its leading cast and it’s a doozy.
Dan Stevens, who recently finished on Downton Abbey and will soon be seen as the Beast in the live-action Beauty and the Beast film, will play Haller. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he’s “about to give up when he meets the girl of his dreams.”
The girl of his dreams will probably turn out to be the previously cast Rachel Keller as Syd, “a self-sufficient and street smart woman who uses her sharp and prickly demeanor to protect her soft core because even though it makes her a sucker and puts her at risk, she still believes in happily ever after.”
Rounding out the cast is Parks and Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza as Lenny, David’s drug-addled friend who believes her life is about to turn around, and Jean Smart (Fargo) as Melanie, the therapist “with a sharp mind and unconventional methods.”
For a show that’s definitely a risk, this is certainly a high-caliber cast. It’ll be interesting to see how deep into the comics this Noah Hawley drama pilot goes.
So far Haller is the only recognizable comic character, and it remains to be seen whether or not they’ll introduce any big X-Men characters.
Legion is set to being production in March.
