It has been a busy week! We’ve got a blockbuster of a movie in theaters now, and more to come this coming weekend. We’ve got renewal confirmations for all the CW/DC television shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and Black Lightning), as well as Riverdale and Supernatural. We also got some dino-sized director news. So let’s jump into this week’s headlines and updates!
Jurassic World 3 Finds Director
With Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom set to hit theaters on June 22nd, there is a lot of buzz around the entire Jurassic franchise. While J.A. Boyana has taken the director’s chair for the second installment, Trevorrow did have a hand in writing the script and now we know he’ll return to helm the third film in the new series. Steven Spielberg announced that Trevorrow will direct and write the film that’s set for a June 11, 2021 release.
Ready Player One Hits the Leaderboard
It’s that time again, time to take a look at the Box Office numbers for the past week, which also included a holiday weekend. We had a major film release this week with Ready Player One, but was it enough to topple the mighty Black Panther from its stranglehold on the number one position on the scoreboard? Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the Ernest Cline novel brought in $64.3 million domestically and totaling $234.2 million worldwide. It took control of the weekly number one spot on the box office, with Black Panther actually dropping to the number three spot but the Marvel movie has grossed $1.2 billion worldwide since it’s initial release which makes it the biggest movie of 2018 with second place at half that mark. The number two movie at the box office this week was Tyler Perry’s Acrimony, currently at $20 million domestically. Still hanging around the top five at number four is I Can Only Imagine and at number five, Sherlock Gnomes.
Horror Silently Strikes Back
Hitting theaters this week is the critically lauded A Quiet Place which was directed by and stars John Krasinski (Jim Halpert from The Office) and co-stars his wife Emily Blunt. Krasinski is also credited as one of the screenwriters as well, in one of the more highly anticipated horror films for the year. Also releasing this week is the John Cena comedy Blockers, and two films based on actual events, Chappaquiddick and The Miracle Season. It’s a big week for drama and thrillers, but will they be enough to unseat the new king of the mountain, Ready Player One?
