Avengers updates, Star Wars sneak peeks and free comics can only mean one thing: it’s finally May! In anticipation of May the 4th AND Free Comic Book Day, we’ve got a ton of cool stuff to cover this week. Let’s dive in.
Avengers Gets Revenge
No surprises here – Avengers: Infinity War tops this week’s box office charts with an out-of-this-world $17 million in ticket sales. Meanwhile, A Quiet Place keeps a steady pace as a distant second with roughly $835k. Could Infinity War top Black Panther as 2018’s highest-grossing film? We’d bet our last vibranium dollar on it.
Arrested Development Is Coming Back…Kinda
That’s right, on Tuesday Netflix announced they would be releasing a “new” version of season 4. Initially premiering in 2013, the latest season of Arrested Development was met with mixed reviews: while a handful of fans loved it, an equal number thought it strayed too far from the show’s basic themes. Where the season took a new direction and focused on a single character per episode, the remixed version takes a more traditional approach and presents the show as a more succinct season.
Just in time to celebrate Cinco de Quarto, the new(ish) season is already available. Hopefully, this will tide us over until season 5.
Ant-Man and the Wasp Trailer
We also got a fresh new look at our favorite tiny Superhero kicking giant bad guy butt. The latest Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer shows Scott Lang teaming up with Hope (AKA The Wasp) to stop Ghost, a supervillain with the uncanny ability to literally walk through walls. Oh, and Michael Peña gets to reprise his role as the lovable laughable sidekick.
But hey, enough talk. You can check out the latest trailer below.
New Star Wars Animation Gets a Release Date
Good news. Production on Star Wars Resistance is well underway with a tentative release date set for this fall on the Disney Channel. The latest animated series will take place before Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will focus on members of the up-and-coming Resistance. Don’t worry, you’ll still see plenty of cameos by BB-8, Poe Dameron, and Captain Phasma.
Fans can expect lots of high-flying action with an engaging story and tons of heart. According to Lucasfilm veteran Dave Filoni, “There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
You Get a Comic, You Get a Comic. Everyone Gets a Comic!
It’s one of the most anticipated events of the year and it’s right up there with Record Store Day in terms of customer turnout. Yup, May 5, 2018, marks the 10th anniversary of Free Comic Book Day. Participating stores will be dishing up a cornucopia of free titles – 52, to be exact. You can find the closest participating store near you using this handy shop locator.
This year’s shaping up to be one of the best yet, with free titles from The Nightmare Before Christmas, Riverdale, Overwatch, and much, much more. We’re particularly psyched about the new Transformers: Unicron saga.
You can check the full list of comics available here.
Hasbro’s Got the Power
And in this week’s collectible news we recently reported how Hasbro acquired the rights to the Powers Rangers franchise from Saban. This has been a long time coming, but somehow it’s still a surprise. As the world’s biggest toy maker, Hasbro has the potential to reformat and grow the Power Rangers line like never before. Plus, think about all the potential crossovers. Power Rangers meets Transformers? Yes, please.
Because you can never have enough Black Series figures, here’s a sneak peek at the amazing new Star Wars The Black Series Admiral Piett Figure. As an exclusive, this figure’s not going to be available for long, so you may want to lock in those pre-orders before it’s too late.
