A Brief History of Hasbro Mighty Muggs

Before vinyl figures were in every mall and store, there was Mighty Muggs. Created by Hasbro, these figures were super exaggerated, but cuddly versions of superheroes from Marvel, Star Wars, Transformers, Indiana Jones, and G.I. Joe. During the first decade of the 21st Century, collectors could gather up Mighty Muggs versions of Darth Vader, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Indiana Jones, Cobra Commander, and many more. Even when Mighty Muggs were commercially discontinued, exclusive lines were created for conferences, conventions, and other events. Among the many characters created exclusively were Commander Gee and Admiral Akbar from the Star Wars universe, Wolverine, Red Skull, and the Punisher from Marvel Comics, Short Round from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Prowl from Transformers, among others.

Well, these marvelous creations may have been gone for a while, but they were not forgotten. And the good news is Hasbro is bringing back the Mighty Muggs in 2018. The news was announced at this year’s New York Comic Con in early October, and a Mighty Muggs Chewbacca was displayed at this year’s London Comic Con in late October.

In January 2018, Hasbro will release Mighty Muggs from Star Wars and Marvel. The Star Wars release will offer Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Rey, and Chewbacca. The featured Marvel universe characters will be Captain America, Spider-Man, Black Widow, Hulk, and Groot.

Look for these new and improved Mighty Muggs to have additional features. While still retaining the popular exaggerated forms from before, collectors will be able to display these figures with one of three interchangeable facial expressions, simply by tapping down the head. Also, special attention has been given to updating each figure to match the character’s current look, and to the eyes, making them even more expressive than before.

To finish it off, each figure comes with its own compact, hard plastic case that is attractive and easy to display. Eventually, Hasbro will have around 50 figures available.

The holidays are almost upon us. What better gift to tell the collector in your life that you care? What better way to start off a new year of collecting than with the new and improved Mighty Muggs, available soon from Hasbro, at Entertainment Earth?
