Jurassic World Debuts with a Big Bang [Updated]

At Jurassic World‘s release last night I was taken on an awe-evoking journey reminiscent of the Spielberg film which debuted 22 years ago yesterday.

Being a fan of the original series, I was at first resistant to the sequel and expected disappointment, but instead I was met with a pleasant mix of horror and comedy which exemplifies the Jurassic Park franchise.

Part slapstick comedy, and, in the same breath, plagued by horrific death scenes, the film was enjoyable – if a tad cheesy. That said, the film elicits immense feelings of nostalgia.

Perhaps most notably, the film’s score pays tribute to the original theme by John Williams, which, as an avid fan of Williams, really had me reliving the classic story line. The score even inspired The Warp Zone’s a capella Jurassic Park theme… which is rad, and you should watch below.

Easter eggs abound, if you loved Jurassic Park, you’re bound to enjoy Jurassic World. And if the box office records from last night are any indication, the film will be a smash hit!

On Thursday alone, the box office grossed $18.5 million, which has resulted in some news sources anticipating the summer blockbuster to earn a whopping $115 to $130 million on opening weekend. That’s $7.3 million more than was earned by 2014’s highest-grossing summer blockbuster release night, and a weekend expected to garner $20 million more than said movie – and yes, I am referring to Marvel‘s groundbreaking Guardians of the Galaxy.

UPDATE: Jurassic World may have had a strong opening night, but it was nothing compared to what it raked in over the weekend. Smashing global records, Jurassic World now has the honor of being the first film to break half a billion dollars in its opening weekend by making $524 million. It broke the domestic opening weekend record (previously held by The Avengers) and the international opening weekend record (which Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 held).

Chris Pratt also told Entertainment Weekly that he is signed on for more films.

Spoiler alert: If, like in Guardians, you’re expecting to see a shirtless Chris Pratt, you will be sorely disappointed. But if you’re in the mood for action, comedy, dark horror, and, I’ll say, at least a gritty, dirty, and deliciously “perfumed” Chris Pratt – this film is for you.

So, are you excited to see Jurassic World yourself? Are you even more excited to hear the original Jurassic Park theme again? Sound off in the comments below!
