Video games have always been hit or miss when adapted to television or film. But there’s one game that fans have been clamoring for as a live-action adaptation and it looks like it’s finally happening. That’s right, Nintendo and Netflix are working together to develop a live action series based on The Legend of Zelda.
Set in the fictional world of Hyrule, the various video games center around a young boy named Link who undertakes various adventures, where he often works with and helps save Princess Zelda.
Netflix describes their future series as “Game of Thrones for a family audience”. That certainly sounds like the right tone and approach, as Hyrule is a fantasy realm full of various locations and numerous mystical beasts and dangers.
They’re currently searching for a writer and the project is still in very early stages. But this is still exciting because Nintendo is known for being very protective of their property. The Legend of Zelda animated series ran for one season only and the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film was a notorious flop.
There’s a chance this series could never see the light of day, but the fact that they’re looking for a writer is promising. We would love to see what they create, after the success Netflix has had with some of their original series so far. And we’ve certainly waited a long time to see Hyrule, Link, Zelda, and all the other memorable characters in the flesh.
