Lupita Nyong’o in Talks to Co-Star in Marvel’s Black Panther

In some truly exciting news for the day, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o is in talks to join Marvel’s Black Panther!

According to Variety, she could join the film as the love interest of T’Challa aka Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman, who wowed audiences in his first outing as the Wakandan hero in Captain America: Civil War).

While I’m normally very wary of female characters being described solely as “love interests,” especially in superhero films, under the direction of Ryan Coogler, I have no doubt her character will be much more than just a love interest.

There’s no hint as to which love interest this will be, but Black Panther, as with all comic characters, has had many and there are great possibilities for Nyong’o.

We know she won’t be playing the mutant Storm, who was once married to T’Challa, as the character is owned by Fox, but other possible characters include Malaika, a trade envoy who is a very minor character; Monica Lynne, a jazz singer from Georgia who was once engaged to the hero; and Monica Rambeau, a hero in her own right and oft-ally of Captain Marvel, who will star in her own film in 2019.

Most fans seem to think she’ll be playing Lynne as of now, but how cool would it be if Nyong’o was cast as Rambeau and also appeared in Captain Marvel?

Nyong’o is definitely having a great time with Disney – she played Maz Kanata in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Raksha in The Jungle Book, and will also be starring in Disney’s upcoming live-action film Queen of Katwe.

Black Panther is set to arrive on February 16, 2018.
