Marvel Comics Revives Steve Rogers, Complete with New High-Tech Shield

Say goodbye to old man Steve Rogers!

This spring, Marvel will debut Captain America: Steve Rogers, a new comic which sees Steve back at peak condition.

But don’t think this means you’ll see the end of Sam Wilson as Captain America. Instead, both Steve and Sam will occupy the same role, just in different capacities.

Nick Spencer, the writer for the new Steve Rogers series, explains:

“Captain America: Steve Rogers and Captain America: Sam Wilson will act as great counter-points to one another. If you’re digging the topical, ripped-from-the-headlines approach we’re taking in Sam’s book, we’ve got plenty more of that to come. And if you’re up for a more timeless take, with Captain America facing off against Hydra and his classic rogues gallery, Steve’s book will be just the thing for you.”

The new series won’t be another origin story, with Cap facing off against Hydra during World War II, but rather the Hydra of today, so he’ll co-exist with Sam, as seen in the first cover:

With this new series comes plenty of other new things for Steve Rogers.

First is a set of new threads, with a sleeker and more modern design. His new costume has several elements that are key to Captain America, including the red, white, and blue color scheme, as well as the white star chest piece. Plus, his scale armor is back!

Perhaps even more exciting (or jarring, depending on how you look at it) is Steve’s new shield, outfitted to jive with the tech-savvy 21st century.

It takes on the triangular shape of his original shield and features an energy blade for attacking, as well as the ability to split into two for enhanced, hand-to-hand combat.

Check out some concept art for it.

It’s certainly an interesting approach, especially given that Steve is supposed to be the man out of time. But how long can he realistically be out of time?

Captain America: Steve Rogers is set to hit stands in Spring 2016.

And don’t forget to see more Captain America here.
