Big things are coming to a laptop near you thanks to a deal brokered between Netflix and Disney. Massive, Hulk-sized things. Death Star-sized, even.
Back in 2012, a landmark deal made between the Disney corporation and Netflix gave the streaming service exclusive U.S. subscription TV rights for all new releases. Other services, such as Hulu, Amazon Prime, and former carrier Starz were effectively locked out of making their own deals with the mega-studio. The only problem was, according to the contract, Netflix subscribers would not see any of that content until 2016.
Which brings us to today, when Netflix ever-so-casually announced on their blog that, “from September onwards, Netflix will become the exclusive pay TV home of the latest films from Disney, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Pixar.”
That’s right, the deal doesn’t just cover princesses and talking cars, it’s bringing all of your favorite superheroes and space scoundrels to your computer and televisions too. Additionally, the deal covers all films produced by Disney and their affiliate studios in 2016 and beyond. Netflix will be getting the films after the DVD and Blu-Ray releases, but much sooner than they would have before this deal.
Although Netflix dropped this in their blog post intending to get me all hyped up for summer, all it really has me doing is hoping that summer goes by in a hurry. We still don’t have a date for when all of these movies are supposed to be hitting the home page, but you can bet I’ll be refreshing the page first thing in the morning every day come September until they’re up.
