Marvel and NYCC Team Up to Honor the FDNY with Superhero Themed Helmets

If you’re going to be at New York Comic Con this weekend, then you don’t want to miss the series of Marvel fire fighter helmets in Artist Alley at the Javits Center in honor of the FDNY.

Marvel announced the news yesterday:

“To honor the FDNY for their 150th anniversary and raise money for the FDNY Foundation, Marvel has teamed up with NYC & Company and ReedPOP to create a line of super hero-inspired helmet designs. These one-of-a-kind items feature artwork by several comic artists, including Damion Scott, Kaare Andrews, Phil Noto, Walt Simonson, Phil Jimenez, Joe Rivera and Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada.”

A majority of them will be up for auction Saturday at the convention, while the remainder will be auctioned off on eBay from October 19-23.

You can check out a gallery of the various helmets below.

Damion Scott, one of the artists, shares what this means to him:

“I’m a New Yorker. I may be in need of the FDNY’s services one day. This was my way of paying it forward. Plus these ‘911’ real heroes deserve all the support and honor they can get.”

Several different characters are represented on the variety of helmets, each with unique designs and features. Kaare Andrews ended up creating an Iron Man helmet and he said that pulling out the helmet for the first time reaffirmed his choice because it was “real gear” and that feeling “lent itself to Iron Man.”

He goes on to explain that he wanted the helmet to be art and seems enthusiastic about the end result:

“Not sure who will end up with this crazy helmet, but it features working lights, sounds and if you unscrew the visor from the inside of the helmet, you can actually fit it over your head and wear it! Not that I would recommend actually trying to fight fires in the thing. Hope that wasn’t the intent…I am Fire Man!”

This sounds like it’s a win-win for everyone: the artists, the fans, and the real heroes this project is honoring.

The helmets will be on display in Artist Alley at the Javits Center at NYCC, running from October 8-11. The big auction at the convention will be held on Saturday.
