Pacific Rim 2 Lands a Director, So Fire Up the Jaegers

In one of the most surprising moves from Hollywood yet, Pacific Rim 2 has a director.

For a movie that has been so riddled with with stops and starts (first it was halted indefinitely, then it was back on, and then it was entirely up in the air), landing something as pivotal as a director is a shock, but a good sign.

Landing a director implies the original film’s director and creator, Guillermo del Toro, will not be taking on the sequel and that is indeed the case.

Instead, Daredevil showrunner and Starz’ Spartacus creator Steven S. DeKnight, will be directing the new film. It will be his first feature film directing gig, but after the positive response to Daredevil, most people seem supportive of him.

While del Toro will not be directing, he’ll remain on board as producer and should still have plenty of creative input. Plus, it’s hard to argue with his enthusiasm:

It’s hard to imagine this universe without him at the helm, given this has been such a passion project for him, and he has a vision like no one else, but as a Pacific Rim fan, I can safely say I’m just elated this film is happening at all. (Take that, Transformers.)

And it’s not like del Toro doesn’t have plenty of other projects on his plate at the moment.

There’s no plot details for PacRim 2, but as del Toro said on Twitter, more news is coming soon and we’ll be sure to keep you updated.
