It’s time to go back to the future! Hello again everyone and welcome to another episode of Plastic Soul: The Entertainment Earth Pop Culture Show, I’m your host Jason Lindsey.
Back to the Future DeLorean by Playmobil
Remember way back years ago in the early days of Plastic Soul when I was talking about and how they did a James Bond Aston Martin set with four figures ejector seats, revolving license plate, tire slashes that come out the sides, etcetera, and how much I wanted to get it and how if I was a kid and I had that I’d never leave the house? Right? Well, I haven’t gotten it yet, but I did get the Back to the Future DeLorean by Playmobil.
It is amazing. Now I didn’t want to make it sound like I play with toys, but I’ve been playing with this thing since I got it. It’s beautifully done, I guess I didn’t realize the Playmobil stuff was kind of realistic. I always assume because of the figures in my memory of them that they were a little more exaggerated, but this is a pretty good model of the DeLorean with the wings that pop up and close, and the wheels of course, flip inward and float from when it goes off to be in Back to the Future 2.
The Best Bits of Detail
This thing is fantastic, it takes a little bit of building which is cool because I’m smart enough, I can do it. If this was Lego, forget it, it would take nine months to do this. The best bit are the lights, you click it once and it’s kind of doing the rev up ‘here we go we’re about to get going’ thing. The flux capacitor lights up inside and then it kind of settles down and you have solid lights after the blinking stops. You can turn it off or you can get the blinking, click it again you go right to solid. Look at that, isn’t that nice? It’s comforting, I don’t know what it is.
My favorite bits are the three figures, of course they’re Playmobil style so they don’t look like Christopher Lloyd, Michael J. Fox or Einstein for that matter. I don’t think they could get his likeness rights, so they couldn’t do the dog exactly like he was in the film, but they’re really cool because the little bits of details that go on the figures, like Doc Brown’s watch and especially, my favorite part, are the little cuffs that click on to Marty’s arms which are the rolled up cuffs of the jean jacket that had that Paisley pattern on the inside. That’s just great, little detail. I think Einstein comes with a little thing that goes around his neck to tell that he’s gone into the future, and it’s got lots of detail.
I haven’t put the stickers on it yet because I don’t know if I want to, I think it might cheapen it slightly. I like this kind of look that’s been around. A little bit of plutonium and a little case that Doc has. You put the plutonium in the car and you’re ready to go.
A Love for Back to the Future
I have fallen in love with this. I’ve been staring at it and enjoying it since I put it together and never get tired of pressing the button. Look at that, I don’t know about you but I hear the music, do you hear the music? Do you hear the theme music or do you hear Huey Lewis? Because I hear Huey Lewis in my head all the time, he’s the soundtrack of my life. But I kind of hear the Back to the Future music. Another bit of this is the little kit you can get that is from Back to the Future 2 in the skateboard adventure when they’re on the hover bikes, and there’s also a set that’s 1955 Marty and Doc that I have to now get of course, because they’re dressed in those outfits.
I want to be clear I love Back to the Future, I think it’s a near perfect movie. It’s great, never a fan of the other two, nothing against them, nothing against people that love them, but they just never grabbed me. I saw them, I’ve seen them, I have all the box sets, but the first one is kind of a thing of beauty, and we never got toys. I know we’ve had the reaction ones and we’ve had the NECA ones, and all these things we never thought we’d get, but this is pretty special. Do I wish it made sounds? Yeah, but you know I’ll take lights or sounds, whatever works.

Anyway, there it is, the DeLorean, the Back to the Future, I don’t know if we call it a DeLorean or the time machine because I used to not be able to call it DeLorean on the packaging, but here it is. It’s fantastic, I love it, you’re going to love it, maybe you won’t, let me know what you think in the comments.
