Power Rangers Trailer – It’s Morphin Time

Can five teenage “screw ups” who develop new special powers come together to save their town and the world from an evil alien attack? That’s the question asked by the new Power Rangers movie trailer called “It’s Morphin Time.” Yep, in this trailer we get to see Jason (Dacre Montgomery), Billy (RJ Cyler), Trini (Becky G), Zack (Ludi Linn) and Kimberly (Naomi Scott) start to get the powers that will turn them into Red Ranger, Blue Ranger, Yellow Ranger, Black Ranger and Pink Ranger. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to be easy right off the bat. There are going to be struggles, but they’ll learn to properly use their powers. You can count on that.

But first they have to meet Zordon, the being responsible for giving them their powers. Hearing him proclaim, “The Power Rangers were a legion of warriors. You must become those warriors” as spoken by no other than Bryan Cranton as Zordon certainly gives the movie and future franchise some prestige, even if we only see him in the trailer as a face on the wall. Elizabeth Banks also looks like she’s having a good time as the evil Rita Repulsa, and her costume and makeup make her look dynamite! Banks has a history of finding the fun in goofy roles, and she has the potential to be great in this one.

The look of the trailer is a far cry from the cheesy production values of previous power ranger excursions. They’re definitely better, in line with today’s super hero blockbusters. That, and the darker tone of both the first and this more recent trailer (though, admittedly, there is more humor in this second trailer) show that the filmmakers here want to be taken seriously.

“It’s Morphin Time” suggests that the movie will attempt to combine humor with weightier issues. But will it be enough to launch a new franchise of heroes in a time when Marvel, DC and Transformers dominate? Only time will tell. And that time begins when the Power Rangers movie opens March 24.
