After months of speculation, we’ve finally gotten a first look at the upcoming sci-fi extravaganza Ready Player One. Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and directed by none other than Steven Spielberg, the film features Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts, Olivia Cooke, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and oodles upon oodles of pop culture and video game references.
Set in the not-too-distant future of 2045, the trailer shows us a barren, overcrowded world where the only recluse from the daily hustle is a virtual reality called OASIS. Think Oculus Rift on steroids, this alternate reality lets people become whoever they want…and do whatever they want.
As the trailer shows, the VR world is thrown into chaos after its creator suddenly dies, but not before issuing a challenge: Whoever can find the hidden Easter egg will not only inherit a huge sum of money (half a trillion to be exact), they’ll have total control over the OASIS itself. Now, with the help of a mysterious teammate, Wade risks everything to uncover the truth and find the hidden secrets.
Just shy of two and a half minutes long, this trailer offers some serious Easter eggs of its own. From Street Fighter to Tomb Raider, Thundercats to even that awesome DeLorean from Back to the Future, this trailer is jam-packed with retro games and sci-fi references. See if you can spy them all below.
Based on the hugely popular Ernie Cline novel, Ready Player One is set to hit theaters in March. If the film is anything like the trailer, it’s sure to be an instant blockbuster.
