UPDATE 9/24: Ridley Scott has announced that the title for his Prometheus sequel will be Alien: Paradise Lost. So despite not connecting to the Alien franchise yet, the title might draw in more people.
Ridley Scott is a director with a lot of projects under his belt, some better than others. One of his best is the 1979 sci-fi horror film Alien, which he plans to continue over the next handful of years.
If you’ll remember, Neil Blomkamp will direct the next Alien, while Scott is going to continue with Prometheus, the 2012 prequel that was more confusing than anything else.
So will a Prometheus sequel finally explain its connection to Alien? Well. Ehhhhh.
In speaking to the German site FilmFutter (and translated by The Guardian), Scott explains it won’t be the next film that connects the universe: “It will be in the one after this one or maybe even a fourth film before we get back into the Alien franchise.”
Whew, okay. Scott expects us to have a lot of faith, it would seem, waiting for a payoff that could be years away.
However, he does give the impression he’s given this universe a lot of thought, which is promising:
“The whole point is to explain the Alien franchise and how and why the creation of the aliens. I always thought of the Alien as kind of a piece of bacterial warfare. I always thought that that original ship, which I call the Croissant, was a battleship, holding these biomechanoid creatures that were all about destruction.”
It could turn out to be completely worth it, but that’s asking a lot of the audience, who overall had a lackluster response to the first Prometheus (Michael Fassbender not included).
You can next see Ridley Scott’s directing chops with The Martian, which hits theaters next Friday, October 2nd. It so far has a 95% on RottenTomatoes and I think could turn out to be one of the best films of the year.
Tell us: what did you think of Prometheus? Are you looking forward to more to see how they explain Alien?
