Video gamers mourn the recent loss of Robin Williams, who was an ardent video game lover. Since his death, details surrounding his likeness have been requested throughout the video game world in a noble attempt to honor his memory.
A petition was circulating the Internet after the passing of Robin Williams, imploring Nintendo to have Williams appear in the upcoming Legend of Zelda game. The Zelda game, which is known for its friendly and light-hearted characters, spoke to fans who knew of the similarly sweet and caring demeanor of Williams. The petition to have Robin Williams appear in one of the oldest game series today accrued 90,000 names in less than a week, which brought the petition straight to Nintendo.
“Robin Williams was loved at Nintendo,” a Nintendo representative said. “We appreciate the outpouring of support from the gaming community,” their statement continued, “and hear the request… to honor him in a future game.”
The response extended their condolences to Zelda Williams, Robin Williams’ daughter, but did not directly appease the petition by stating that this wasn’t the proper time to discuss the possibilities for future games. The statement ended that the company will “hold our memories of Robin close.”
Robin Williams was an avid video game lover. He so adored The Legend of Zelda series that that he named his daughter after the main heroine of the games, Princess Zelda. In an ad for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D release on Nintendo 3DS, Williams called both Princess Zelda and his daughter “pretty magical.”
World of Warcraft already has confirmed that it has a Robin Williams tribute in the works. Ian Hazzikostas, lead designer of World of Warcraft, offered a statement for the company in which he called them all “massive Robin Williams fans.” While there’s nothing set in stone yet, it may end up being either a character or a series of characters based on his past roles.
These requests are a true testament to how loved Robin Williams is by moviegoers, comic show attendees, and gamers alike. He will live on in the hearts of many devoted fans, as well as by his friends and family.
