Joe and Anthony Russo Infinitely Join with Marvel Studios

Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age of Ultron comes out in less than a month as the last big Marvel team-up he helms (at least for now). Rumored for months, Marvel has finally confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will direct Avengers: Infinity War – Parts 1 and 2, set to come out in May 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The brothers directed 2014’s popular Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are currently working on Captain America: Civil War. They’re an obvious choice for the next Avengers films, and we couldn’t be more excited.

With Civil War, the Russo brothers will have plenty of superhero team-up experience before Infinity War. Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Tony Stark, Natasha Romanoff, Sam Wilson, and Clint Barton are all set to appear in Civil War so far, as well as introducing T’Challa (Black Panthter). I wouldn’t be surprised if more characters we already know also show up in the film.

The Russo brothers are a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). They have an incredible understanding of its characters as well as how to tell a good story. That being said, it’s rumored that Infinity War will consist of a (mostly) new Avengers team, including Black Panther, Spider-Man, and possibly Bucky Barnes or Sam Wilson picking up the moniker Captain America. After all, contracts don’t last forever.

Still, it’s a long way out and anything could happen. It will also be interesting to see where superhero films stand in Hollywood by 2018 and if they’re still dominating box offices.

The Russo brothers got their start in television, directing and producing shows like Happy Endings and Community (which is newly back with its sixth season on Yahoo!). They earned an Emmy for directing the pilot of Arrested Development and are currently producing an upcoming NBC multi-camera comedy from Aseem Batra. Busy is an understatement for the two of them.

Are you excited by this change of directors? What did you think of Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Let us know in the comments!
