Sherlock Goes Victorian in New Trailer for Upcoming Christmas Special

Steven Moffat’s popular series, Sherlock, which places Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved characters in the 21st century, is going back to its roots.

For a one-shot Christmas special, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman’s John Watson, are heading back to Victorian England.

Fans first got a taste for the special at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but now a full-length trailer has been released – and you can watch it below!

Ah, there is something so delightfully gleeful about seeing Sherlock with a deerstalker cap and Watson with a handlebar mustache. Especially when Watson says: “You’re Sherlock Holmes, wear the damn hat.” Hear, hear!

The trailer gives nothing away about how or why this special is set in Victorian England, but the trailer brandishes a markedly darker tone than usual. There are some interesting color schemes at work and does Sherlock’s line about ghosts hint the story might have some gothic themes to it? One can only hope.

The special will debut here in the States under PBS’ Masterpiece Theater, although there’s no official date yet.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited to see Sherlock enter the Victorian era? Sound off in the comments!
