Simon Pegg Will Be Giving It All He’s Got in Star Trek 3, Captain

Good news, Star Trek fans! A new screenwriter has signed on for Star Trek 3 and it’s someone who’s pretty familiar with the franchise.

That’s right, the familiar face of Simon Pegg a.k.a. Montgomery “Scotty” Scott will be joining Doug Jung (Dark Blue, Banshee) to co-write the script for the third installment in the rebooted franchise.

After a rocky start for this film’s crew, it seems to be getting back on track and shaping up to be a good film. Roberto Orci, producer and screenwriter of both Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, was initially signed on to direct the third film – his first directing gig ever. After he stepped down, Paramount was quick to find a new director in Justin Lin and confirm a 2016 release.

Now they’ve added a new screenwriter and are proceeding as planned.

Pegg, a great comedic actor and a wonderfully fun Scotty, is no stranger to screenwriting. He’s written hits such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Paul, and The World’s End. His strength lies with comedy, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing here.

The 2009 Star Trek film was both fun and better received than Star Trek Into Darkness. A return to this franchise’s core of fun space adventures and exploration could be great and undoubtedly Pegg will help make that happen. Maybe we’ll even see a cameo from Nick Frost!

Star Trek 3, directed by Justin Lin and starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, and John Cho, is set to hit theaters on July 8, 2016.

What do you think of this development? Do you think Simon Pegg will be a good addition to the writing team of this film? Are you hoping to see some comedy? Let us know in the comments!
