Surprising No One, Star Wars: The Force Awakens Shatters Every Box Office Record

Initially, it looked like Star Wars: The Force Awakens was just shy of Jurassic World’s opening weekend global box office record. But now that the final numbers are being tallied, the dinosaur blockbuster can say goodbye to its record.

In fact, that movie can say goodbye to all of its records because in just one weekend, The Force Awakens shattered every single record.

Earning $57 million on Thursday alone, it had the biggest pre-show day numbers of all time. Add that to Friday’s tally and Star Wars wiped the floor as the new highest opening-day film, earning $120.5 million.

Not only that, but TFA is now the only movie to ever reach $100 million in a single day (Jurassic World crossed into triple digits in two days).

Domestically, the film obliterated any opening-weekend records previously held by raking in a total of $247 million, far head of Jurassic World’s $208.8 million.

I was a little disappointed when Disney first estimated Star Wars’ global opening-weekend at $517 million, which would be behind the $525 million that Jurassic World made. But when final numbers came in and that domestic number was a lot higher than anticipated, TFA actually made $528 million globally this weekend, setting the new record.

The Force really is strong with this movie, and I expect it will only get stronger.

But will it be strong enough to become the biggest film of all time and surpass James Cameron’s Avatar? One can only hope, and if it continues at this rate, it just might. Fingers crossed.
