In Entertainment Weekly’s upcoming Fall Movie Preview issue, Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominates. With new photos, which you can check out below, and small secrets revealed, it’s hard not to get excited – or realize this will be the biggest film of the year.
Director J.J. Abrams doesn’t spill too much in the issue, but what he does say might leave you with heart palpitations.
Like what we all suspected, the weapon of our big bad, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), is constructed by him, says Abrams: “The lightsaber is something that he built himself, and is as dangerous and as fierce and as ragged as the character.”
But is his name really even Kylo Ren? Sort of.
“He is a character who came to the name Kylo Ren when he joined a group called the Knights of Ren,” Abrams says. Ren is a title, as it were, and if you want to find out who the Knights of Ren are, you’ll just have to file into a movie theater like the rest of us on December 18th. It won’t stop us from speculating, though!
Abrams is aware of the films and story that came before this one – as is Ren. His mask is meant to be a nod to Vader and Abrams acknowledges that Ren “is well aware of what’s come before, and that’s very much a part of the story of the film.”
That’s an interesting notion and definitely gets you thinking about the First Order and how much of the Empire really is left in them.
You can check out all the photos below, which include a great look at Domhnall Gleeson’s General Hux, who’s described as “a cruel leader of The First Order who craves to show the galaxy his might.” You’ll also be interested to see the new arm C-3PO is rocking.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Domhnall Gleeson, Adam Driver, and Gwendoline Christie, is set to come out on December 18, 2015.
