Does New Star Wars: The Force Awakens Casting Hint at Film’s Action Tone?

If you thought the cast for J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens was already pretty big, get ready to expand your universe because three new actors were cast for the project.

This information is curiously late as the movie wrapped filming and is currently in post-production. Still, it wouldn’t be called movie magic if things like this were totally impossible.

According to The Wrap, three actors from The Raid 2 have been added to the cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, namely Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and Cecep Arif Rahman. What is perhaps most notable about this news is who these people are – really great stunt choreographers, particularly with martial arts.

This information is the bare minimum at the moment. We don’t know if they’ll be on screen or helping with choreography off screen. Again, it is important to remember the film has already finished shooting. There are always re-shoots but our imagination can be endless with these three performers on board now.

The question that it begs is what kind of new action Abrams will bring to this film. Not much is cooler than a lightsaber duel, but what about a lightsaber duel with martial arts? Now that would be epic. As long as they still remain gripping and interesting in terms of character, of course.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams and starring Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, and Gwendoline Christie, is set to come out on December 18, 2015.
