Christmas came early and it was in the form of a new poster and full-length trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While the poster was released earlier today (along with movie tickets), lots of fanboys had to sit through a half of NFL football to see this new trailer during ESPN’s Monday Night Football coverage. It was worth the wait. As Director Rian Johnson warned us earlier today on Twitter, this trailer did have some spoilers, so beware the following few paragraphs!
I a legitimately torn. If you want to come in clean, absolutely avoid it.
But it’s gooooood….. https://t.co/Y29K5yz8i4

While the imagery is beyond fantastic and breathtaking, this trailer also gave us a glimpse at the overall war between the Resistance and the First Order. We hear Supreme Leader Snoke and Luke Skywalker sharing both glowing and fearful adjectives when talking about their respective apprentices using the same phrase. Both referred to their natural presence with the Force as raw and powerful. While Snoke is obviously pleased by this, Luke is terrified by Rey’s inherit raw strength.
While we see Luke, likely tentatively, training Rey in the ways of the Force and the lightsaber, we also see Finn on a very different journey. He’s undercover with the First Order and we’ll get to see a huge showdown between him and Captain Phasma. We also get along, emotional look at Kylo Ren piloting his Tie Fighter into a Resistance fleet ship while talking about killing the past and clearly connecting with his mother (General Leia) via the Force as he fires his ship’s blasters into the core of the ship (perhaps inhabited by his mother).
There’s still so much we don’t know about the exact nature of the plot, but we can see the core arc will be about the development of our new characters (and a porg on the Falcon). Rey, Kylo, and Finn are fulfilling their new destinies, one in which involves Rey being tortured by Snoke with the Force. This film promises to have some jaw-dropping space battles, hand-to-hand fighting, and some gut-wrenching dramatic scenes. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher will steal all of our feels as we watch each scene waiting to see if this is the last time we’ll see them in the Star Wars universe. Sadly, we know Fisher will be written out somehow, but it’s that how that is going to make us all weep uncontrollably. And it looks like Leia will be front and center for a lot of this film’s action. Oh….and it looks like Rey might be turning to another side towards the end of this trailer…maybe? We will have to wait until December 15, 2017, to find out.
What did you guys think of the new trailer? Just exactly how excited are you for this new movie? Did you get tickets today? Sound off in the comments and let’s discuss!
