Harley Quinn and Deadshot on the Cover of Empire, Plus a Suicide Squad Love Triangle?

At the start of the week, we got a new full look at Jared Leto’s Joker on the cover of Empire. Then Cara Delevingne appeared on the cover as Enchantress.

It seems the characters of Suicide Squad are taking turns because today Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and Will Smith’s Deadshot showed up!

However, it’s not only pictures we get from Empire’s seemingly endless coverage of the film.

“Harley is the biggest troublemaker, but Deadshot’s actually eyeballing her a little bit,” Smith reveals in the issue. “There’s a pretty ragged romantic triangle there.”

This isn’t entirely out of left field, as Harley and Deadshot (real name Floyd Lawton) have a complicated relationship in the DCnU (aka the timeline following the events of Flashpoint).

However, I can’t help but wonder why a movie about villains contracted by the government has to have romance or a triangle at all.

Director David Ayer sheds more light on Harley’s role in the film:

“It’s about [Harley] breaking free of The Joker and becoming this fully actualized, independent person. That really is a metaphor for everyone’s journey here.”

That’s more reassuring. One of the most frustrating things about the treatment of Harley Quinn is when she’s written only as an extension of someone else, usually the Joker. If done well, it’ll be refreshing and exciting to see Harley as her own character.

Suicide Squad is set to come out on August 5, 2016. It will be directed by David Ayer and will star Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Scott Eastwood, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack and Adam Beach.
