When fans saw Warner Bros. and DC’s first Suicide Squad trailer at San Diego Comic-Con, many noted its dark and violent tones and wondered if the film would receive an R-rating.
After the positive response to the Deadpool film officially receiving an R-rating, it can be assumed that fans are not opposed to more adult-themed comic book films.
The Suicide Squad may not curse like Deadpool, but they certainly have the violence, darkness, and disturbing themes down pat.
However, an R-rating is not in the film’s future. Producer Charles Roven explained in an interview with Collider:
“The intention of the film is definitely to be PG-13… We really want to make these films tonally consistent so that, as I said because this is a shared universe, at least our current thinking—and again, we’re not dealing in absolutes because while this is business it’s also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that’s the whole process of filmmaking is you have to allow for inspiration as well as having a road map for what you’re gonna do. So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13. In some cases, you know, right there on the edge of PG-13, but still PG-13.”
Take that as you will. Like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DC Expanded Universe will be entirely PG-13.
Roven also revealed that it was director David Ayer who first pitched this film to Warner Bros. and that he, Roven, was “very anxious to hear what his take was gonna be on Suicide Squad and I was very happily surprised, but it was right exactly in the pocket that we were looking for. Honestly that movie was essentially greenlit in the pitch meeting.”
In the interview, Roven continually goes back to saying that the film was a really fun set. Even Jared Leto who plays the Joker, despite his isolationist tendencies, provided “fuel for a lot of good sport and a lot of laughs, and his isolation bonded the squad, and we wanted the squad bonded.”
You can imagine a set with so many people, playing so many different types of characters, would be an interesting one at the very least.
“There’s a lot of characters in Suicide Squad, and I think you’ll be engaged with them. They all have fabulously different arcs, they’re all very individualistic, and I think that also they’re very, very human in their own dysfunctional ways. And I think that the personal individuals stories and how they relate to each other will be surprising.”
I still frankly have no idea what to make of this movie. It could go in so many different directions. But everyone involved seems proud and excited about what they’re doing so hopefully they pull it off.
Suicide Squad is set to come out on August 5, 2016. It will be directed by David Ayer and will star Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Viola Davis, Joel Kinnaman, Jai Courtney, Cara Delevingne, Scott Eastwood, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Jim Parrack and Adam Beach.
