Benedict Cumberbatch to Voice the Grinch in New Animated Film

Speaking of Hollywood and new ideas…

Illumination Entertainment announced at CinemaCon that Benedict Cumberbatch would be taking on the classic role of Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch in their new animated film.

Producer Chris Meledandri enthused the British thespian has a voice that conveys “comedic wickedness while embodying vulnerability.”

I certainly can’t fault him there, as Cumberbatch’s voice is quite distinctive, but undoubtedly there’s going to be the question of whether or not this movie is necessary at all.

I’m of the mindset that, while of course we can show children the classics, there’s nothing wrong with reinventing something for new generations. However, the 1966 animated TV special is beloved by many, and Boris Karloff is a big name to live up to.

The Grinch will be adapted by writer Michael LeSieur and is set for release on November 10, 2017.
