Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban Join the Cast of Thor: Ragnarok

There’s been a lot of talk about the cast for Thor: Ragnarok, but today Marvel presented a press release confirming names. And some of them might surprise you. In the absolute best way.

The long-rumored Cate Blanchett officially joins the cast as villain Hela, which is who we predicted she’d play when the talks first started.

Another name that was already confirmed was Tessa Thompson, but now we know who she’ll be playing: Valkyrie, which is exactly who I was hoping she’d play.

So far so good.

The two surprising, but very exciting casting announcements are Jeff Goldblum and Karl Urban.

Goldblum had been rumored beforehand, but many figured the rumor came with some salt the size of a boulder. Turns out we had reason to hope! He will be playing the “eccentric Grandmaster,” who is one of the Elders of the Universe and spends his time mastering various games played throughout the universe.

Meanwhile, Urban is no stranger to franchises, having been in both The Lord of the Rings and Star Trek, and he will take on the role of Skurge. The character’s full title is Skurge the Executioner and he’s half-Frost Giant, half-Asgardian, and often aligns himself with people like Loki and Amora the Enchantress.

These additions are honestly a little jaw-dropping, especially when you factor in the returning cast members they’ll be joining: Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Idris Elba (Heimdall), Sir Anthony Hopkins (Odin), Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), and hopefully Lady Sif and the Warriors Three.

For as much as the Thor movies get their share of disparagement, Ragnarok is already shaping up in epic ways. Director Taika Waititi is not only accomplished, but a breath of fresh air (just check out his Twitter and the conversation he had with other Marvel directors James Gunn and Peyton Reed), and I can’t wait to see the finished product.

Thor: Ragnarok is set to hit theaters on November 3, 2017.

What do you think of this cast? Excited for the movie? Let us know in the comments!
