It’s been rumored for quite some time that Viola Davis would be playing the role of Amanda Waller in the upcoming Suicide Squad film, but now it looks like the actress herself has confirmed it.
When doing press for her new movie Blackhat, she was asked about the supervillain film, based on a team who act as deniable assets for the United States government. In response to whether or not she’s started reading the comic books: “I have not started reading them yet. I’ve read up about her but I’m working out my schedule for Suicide Squad.”
Davis seems eager about the role:
“I’m fascinated by her in this world of superhero-ness because she is not a woman that you would expect. I think that she is a massive contradiction. She’s this big powerful black woman, hard, ready to pick up a gun and shoot anyone at will. I’m fascinated in exploring her psychology, just put it that way. And I’m excited to pick up a gun.”
These quotes definitely sound like confirmation, though the studio hasn’t spoken out about it yet.
In the comics, Waller, often nicknamed “The Wall”, is the government liaison in charge of the Suicide Squad. She has no superpowers but that doesn’t stop her from persistently being a powerful antagonist.
Based on Davis’ past work, and especially her recent work on How to Get Away with Murder, we think she’ll make a strong and memorable Amanda Waller. Not to mention her passion for the character is already promising.
She’ll be joining Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Tom Hardy as Rick Flagg, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtey as playing Boomerang, and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress.
Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer, is set to hit theaters on August 6, 2015.
