The hulking purple alien was featured in a brief clip at the end of The Avengers. Thanos and the Collector in Guardians of the Galaxy hope to find infinity stones, a direct reference to the comics’ infinity gems and likely linked to the Infinity Gauntlet. The Infinity Gauntlet holds six infinity stones and multiplies the already significant power of the stones. But the infinity stone in Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t the first one we’ve seen in Marvel movies. It’s just the first one to be named as such. The blue orb in Loki’s staff (The Avengers), the Aether (Thor 2: The Dark World), and the Tessaract (The Avengers) are all rumored to be other infinity stones. Keep an eye out for more infinity stones in The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron.

Peter Quill and his ragtag team of criminals-turned-heroes venture out to meet the Collector on Knowhere. In comic lore, Knowhere is the the head of a deceased Celestial, though the movies show a Celestial when the Collector introduces the infinity stone by name.

Speaking of the Collector, his collection features more than one nod to Marvel stories. We see Cosmo the Space Dog more than once, a Chitauri (The Avengers), a Dark Elf (Thor: The Dark World), and even Howard the Duck. Even Peter Quill’s mercenary buddy in the film has a counterpart in the comics: Yondu Udonta originally helped found the guardians.

Guardians of the Galaxy references all these and more.
