How do you feel about live action adaptations of classic 1980s anime? Hopefully you’re eager for more of your favorite classic anime because, according to Variety,<\/i> Sony Pictures plans to adapt Robotech<\/a><\/i><\/strong> into a live action feature film after acquiring the rights.<\/p>\n

With Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton developing the film, it’s sure to become a sprawling epic similar to their Immortals<\/i> and 300<\/a><\/i> franchises.<\/p>\n

Overseen by Sony Pictures Entertainment Group President Doug Belgrad, Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael De Luca, and Sony Pictures Vice President of Creative Production Matthew Milam, the team behind the merger is very excited about the project.<\/p>\n

Columbia Pictures Production Chief Michael De Luca said:<\/p>\n

Robotech<\/em> is unique in that it has always been a marriage of spectacle with human characters that seem drawn from life. That\u2019s why we are so excited to be working with Mark and Gianni as we move forward on this project. With a history that offers an epic love triangle, a renegade hero, and a world on the brink of extinction, Robotech<\/em> offers a wide scope and a rich and impressive universe where the story possibilities are endless.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The original US adaptation of the anime showcases humanity fending off waves of alien invasions through the use of giant robots developed from alien technology. The characters “wrestle with both the destructive and redemptive powers of technology,” says Nunnari. As modern society advances technologically, the greater themes and implications of Robotech<\/i> may very well reflect humanity itself.<\/p>\n

Robotech<\/i>, merged by production and distribution company Harmony Gold, is comprised of three separate series: Macross, Southern Cross, and Mospeada. While unrelated, the resulting union introduced the mecha anime to the United States and the US series definitely has the nostalgia factor. My fingers are crossed that the live-action will focus primarily on Macross and the pilots of jet fighters that transform into mechas.<\/p>\n
