This 25-second glimpse into the Hotel is thrilling, if not a bit disconcerting. It’s the first time we’ve seen the Hotel cast featured in a trailer, and the ensuing creepy factor is not lost among the excitement.

Most notably, we see Lady Gaga’s Countess, with a long dress train and flowing white hair, which is accentuated by dark red lipstick. Oh yeah, it’s also worth mentioning that her character reportedly drinks blood.

Based on the number of white-haired, ghoulish, dark-eyed children featured in the trailer, it’s plausible to think that perhaps the eerie children are the subject of the Countess’ feedings. Then again, we also see the children themselves drinking blood, which suggests they are followers of the Countess – or perhaps part of some cult.

We also see Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Chloë Sevigny, Wes Bentley, Angela Bassett, Cheyenne Jackson, Finn Wittrock, and Matt Bomer (WHAT a cast!) in the trailer, but what really caught my eye was the creature leaning into a mattress… from the inside. Some reports suggest that this is the addiction demon, whom Finn Wittrock told MTV News is a “metaphor for addiction itself.” We can see addiction is going to a theme this season, as suggested by Sarah Paulson’s seemingly strung-out character.

While the star-studded cast has kept silent on this season’s story of origin, some fans are predicting that Hotel will be based on the real-life mystery of the death of Elisa Lam, which occurred in the Cecil Hotel.

A series assistant posted an Instagram shot from the set.

And so it begins

A photo posted by @sarastelwagen on Jul 14, 2015 at 9:38am PDT

Some fans theorize that the “CH” stands for Cecil Hotel, which housed grisly guests from serial killers Jack Unterweger and Richard Ramirez, to “Black Dahlia” murder victim Beth Short. The Cecil Hotel was the subject of speculation in 2013, when some theorists speculated that paranormal activity led to the erratic behavior, and subsequent death, of hotel guest Elisa Lam. Lam had disappeared after being shown by security tapes to have entered the hotel elevator, but not ever exiting. Her body was later found in the water supply tanks on the hotel rooftop.

If it’s true that the titular Hotel Cortez – whose name is also perhaps a reference to the Cecil Hotel – also has a creepy elevator scene (as suggested by show creator Ryan Murphy) it is not too far-fetched to assume Hotel may indeed be based on the Elisa Lam mystery.

However, this is all just speculation at this point. What we do know is that we will once again be visiting the Murder House from Season 1, although under what context, I’m not sure. Christine Estabrook, who played realtor Marcy in the first season, will also reprise her character this year.
