﻿{"id":29150,"date":"2015-09-16T13:24:36","date_gmt":"2015-09-16T20:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com/news\/?p=29150"},"modified":"2019-03-06T16:58:23","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T00:58:23","slug":"pacific-rim-2-production-halted-indefinitely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com/news\/pacific-rim-2-production-halted-indefinitely\/","title":{"rendered":"Production on Pacific Rim 2 Has Stopped Indefinitely, No Thanks to Hollywood"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Guillermo del Toro&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/hitlist.asp?theme=Pacific+Rim&amp;id=EN-407186506\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>Pacific Rim<\/strong><\/em><\/a> may not have made a lot of money domestically, but it was a hit internationally and it also boasts a strong and vocal fan base (which I enthusiastically include myself in). Those last two things were enough to greenlight a sequel, which was announced last year.<\/p>\n<p>However, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/hollywood-gorilla-warfare-s-universal-823715?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=THR%20Breaking%20News_2015-09-16%2008:00:00_nstone&amp;utm_term=hollywoodreporter_breakingnews\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em><\/a>, production has since &#8220;been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Why? Well, because of that pesky <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com/news\/2015\/09\/11\/king-kong-vs-godzilla-movie-in-the-works\/\">Godzilla vs King Kong idea<\/a> and Thomas Tull causing some tension over at Universal Studios by moving <em>Kong: Skull Island<\/em> to Warner Bros. after an agreement that Universal would distribute Legendary Pictures films (which Tull is Chairman of) for the next five years.<\/p>\n<p>One of those other Legendary films is <em>Pacific Rim<\/em> and its sequel.<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first time Universal has pulled out of a del Toro directed Legendary film. His newest film, <em>Crimson Peak,<\/em> which will be released on October 16th, lost the financial backing of Universal when it moved ahead with an R rating.<\/p>\n<p>An interesting article in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/scottmendelson\/2015\/09\/16\/will-pacific-rim-2-go-the-way-of-tron-3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"broken_link\"><em>Forbes<\/em><\/a> notes that production might have also been halted because Universal has so many hits right now (<em>Jurassic World, Pitch Perfect 2, Minions, Furious 7<\/em>) and they don&#8217;t need to take a risk with <em>Pacific Rim 2.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To which I shake my first furiously and say: isn&#8217;t that the perfect time for money-obsessed Hollywood to take risks?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;d be the same general reason why Disney pulled the plug on <em>Tron 3.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Maybe if <em>Crimson Peak<\/em> makes enough money, <em>Pacific Rim 2<\/em> can get back on its feet.<\/p>\n<p>This is really disheartening news &#8211; I&#8217;m a big fan of <em>Pacific Rim.<\/em> It&#8217;s a wonderful film that includes epic action and an all-inclusive world that at its core is about humanity and coming together.
