Variety<\/em> recently attended CinemaCon and found out some interesting information about the upcoming Indiana Jones 5<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

In terms of Harrison Ford playing the explorer, and whether or not he’ll ever be replaced, producer Frank Marshall replied: “It\u2019s all about the story. I think both in the Jason Bourne<\/em> series and on Indiana Jones,<\/em> we are not going to do the Bond thing. We think those characters are iconic, and those are the only actors who can play that.”<\/p>\n

Bringing up the Bourne<\/em> franchise is interesting, because while no one has ever played Jason Bourne except Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner headlined The Bourne Legacy<\/em> in 2012 as a character similar to Bourne named Aaron Cross.<\/p>\n

Comparing Indiana Jones<\/em> to this rather than Bond (where different actors play the same role) implies that there could be future Indiana Jones<\/em> movies with a new lead character.<\/p>\n

In other news, Marshall also shed some light on the fifth installment, and not every fan is going to be pleased to hear this: the film will be a continuation following 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.<\/em><\/p>\n

This, of course, does not mean it will be the same caliber as Crystal Skull,<\/em> but fans may find it hard to disassociate feelings for this fifth movie with those of Skull.<\/em><\/p>\n

(Frankly, I don’t think Skull<\/em> is any worse than Temple of Doom,<\/em> but that’s neither here nor there, except to say, similar to Star Trek’s<\/em> even-numbered success, this franchise seems to do best with its odd-numbered films.)<\/p>\n

Indiana Jones 5<\/em> is set to be directed by Steven Spielberg and star Harrison Ford. Disney has announced its theatrical release as July 19, 2019.<\/p>\n
