Did we learn anything from Pixels?<\/em> It doesn’t seem like it, if the existence of The Angry Birds Movie<\/em> and this newly announced film is anything to go by.<\/p>\n

According to a new report, a movie based on the video game Tetris<\/strong><\/em><\/a> is currently in development as a China-U.S. co-production under Threshold Global Studios with an $80 million budget.<\/p>\n

I’m honestly still trying to wrap my head around it, but there are more details if you’re so inclined.<\/p>\n

The film will start shooting in 2017 in China and other locations, “with the Chinese cast featured in the ensemble pic that\u2019s billed as a sci-fi thriller.” So, aliens? And we combat them with falling bricks?<\/p>\n

Producer Larry Kasanoff explained this film will be the first installment in a trilogy and that it’s “not at all what you think; it will be a cool surprise.”<\/p>\n

I’m typically not cynical when it comes to movies and trying new things and taking risks, but a trilogy seems excessive. Who knows? Maybe this film will push the boundaries of film technology and blow us away, but this is a rare moment where I’m leaning more towards skepticism. If anything, the existence of a film doesn’t mean I need to see it so as long as it’s largely inoffensive, I’ll probably just remain ambivalent.<\/p>\n
