{"id":48924,"date":"2016-09-06T12:16:08","date_gmt":"2016-09-06T19:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/?p=48924"},"modified":"2019-03-05T18:03:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-06T02:03:48","slug":"history-of-star-trek-toys-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/history-of-star-trek-toys-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"To Boldly Play: A Warp-Speed History of Star Trek Toys (Part 2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/history-of-star-trek-toys-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Part 1 of our <em>Star Trek<\/em> toys\u00a0retrospective<\/a>, we started surveying the history <em>of Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em> toys with AMT\u2019s classic model kits and Mego\u2019s often odd but always fondly remembered action figures.<\/p>\n<p>Now, let\u2019s see what happened when <em>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0beamed\u00a0from the small to the silver screen. For almost a decade, fans had rallied around the slogan, \u201c<em>Star Trek<\/em> Lives!\u201d Amazingly, it did.<\/p>\n<p>It just took a while for the toys to catch up.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><em>Star Trek<\/em><\/strong><strong> Movie Toys: The Plaything Adventure Was Just Beginning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In its high sci-fi concepts, lingering effects shots and leisurely running time, <em>Star Trek: The Motion Picture <\/em>(1979) aimed to emulate <em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em>. But in its merchandising, <em>TMP<\/em> wanted to mimic the space movie that helped give <em>Trek<\/em> its cinematic shot.<\/p>\n<p>Hoping to create a <em>Star Wars<\/em>-sized splash (and also to raise money for finishing the film), Paramount merchandising exec Dawn Steel struck as many licensing deals as possible. Her dramatic, live \u201cbeam-in\u201d to a presentation for potential licensees helped secure her reputation as a marketing miracle worker. (She would go on to become the first woman to helm a major motion picture studio at Columbia Pictures.)<\/p>\n<p>The biggest tie-in alliance Steel forged was with McDonald\u2019s. In December 1979, the fast food giant launched its first themed Happy Meal, the \u201c<em>Star Trek<\/em> Meal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UvRyBRVpJGw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The meals\u2019 \u201cprizes\u201d were molded plastic rings and bracelets, a board game, glittery iron-on transfers (<em>tr\u00e8s<\/em> \u201970s), and a \u201cvideo communicator\u201d through which kids could scroll <em>Star Trek<\/em> comic strips.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48925\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48925\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-48925 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/happy-meal-trek-697x600.jpg\" alt=\"Star Trek Happy Meal\" width=\"620\" height=\"534\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/happy-meal-trek-697x600.jpg 697w, https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/happy-meal-trek-464x400.jpg 464w, https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/happy-meal-trek-768x661.jpg 768w, https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/happy-meal-trek-600x517.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/happy-meal-trek.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startrek.com\/article\/a-collectors-trek-7-the-tmp-happy-meal-promotion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StarTrek.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>So there they were, among the French fries: the first <em>Star Trek<\/em> movie toys.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Mego\u2019s Last Toy Trek<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>But a <em>Trek<\/em> takeover of America\u2019s toy store aisles wasn\u2019t to be.<\/p>\n<p>Mego Corporation <em>did<\/em> give it the old Starfleet Academy try, with several 3-3\/4-inch fully painted action figures, including <em>five<\/em> of the film\u2019s blink-and-you-miss-\u2019em exotic extraterrestrials.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48926\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48926\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48926\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mego_trek1.jpg\" alt=\"Image: MegoMuseum\" width=\"350\" height=\"457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mego_trek1.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/mego_trek1-306x400.jpg 306w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48926\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.megomuseum.com\/startrek\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MegoMuseum<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p>But neither Mego\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/startrek.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Star Trek <\/em>toys<\/a> nor a new, vacu-formed plastic bridge playset could replicate past success. According to Mego experts, Ilia action figures hung on toy store pegs well into the \u201980s.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Milton Bradley\u2019s <em>Star Trek<\/em> Merchandise Mission<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Milton Bradley also tried to get <em>Trek<\/em> on toy buyers\u2019 radars.<\/p>\n<p>In MB\u2019s 1979 <em>Star Trek<\/em> game\u2014entitled, with jaw-dropping unoriginality, <em>Star Trek Game<\/em>\u2014two\u00a0 to four players, age eight to adult, race small plastic starships across moveable, triangular \u201cspace sectors\u201d (according to the instructions, the board had over 3 million possible arrangements) in order to chart \u201calien phenomena.\u201d The first player to complete three successful missions wins and is named \u201cStar Fleet Commander.\u201d (Seems like the Fleet is setting the leadership bar too low, if you ask me.)<\/p>\n<p>MB also offered some battery-operated (but not included) <em>Trek<\/em> toys through its South Bend electronics division.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48927\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48927\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-48927\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/strek-trek-phasers-865x600.jpg\" alt=\"Image: BugEyedMonsters.com\" width=\"620\" height=\"430\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/strek-trek-phasers-865x600.jpg 865w, https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/strek-trek-phasers-577x400.jpg 577w, https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/strek-trek-phasers-768x533.jpg 768w, https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/strek-trek-phasers-600x416.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/strek-trek-phasers.jpg 1021w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48927\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/bugeyedmonster.com\/star-trek-electronic-phaser-box\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BugEyedMonster.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>Star Trek Phaser Guns <\/em>anticipated the laser tag craze of the \u201980s and early \u201890s. They also featured electronic sound effects, meaning kids didn\u2019t have to shout \u201cpew pew pew\u201d while saving galactic civilization.<\/p>\n<p>But for sheer coolness, the <em>Electronic U.S.S. Enterprise<\/em> blew the phasers away. When <em>Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan<\/em> arrived in 1982, no new toy line helped promote it. (Collins Industrial did sell a <em>The Wrath of Khan<\/em> digital wristwatch that doubled as a video game\u2014\u201ccomplete with space war sound effects!,\u201d an ad in <em>Starlog<\/em> promised\u2014but it was really just a slow-moving <em>Space Invaders<\/em> knockoff.)<\/p>\n<p>Only a smattering of toys accompanied each new <em>Trek<\/em> movie, and these toys weren\u2019t always too impressive. For example, the Ertl Company brought out a few 3-3\/4-inch, ten point-articulated but crudely painted action figures and some rather plain die-cast model starships for <em>Star Trek III: The Search for Spock<\/em> (1984).\u00a0 Some of these ships got a second life, thanks to new stickers and paint jobs, with <em>Star Trek V: The Final Frontier<\/em> (1989).<\/p>\n<p>But no <em>Star Trek V<\/em> toy \u2013 and it <em>must <\/em>be a toy; it hardly seems a practical culinary item &#8211; can steal the spotlight from Kraft\u2019s marshmallow dispenser.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48929\" style=\"width: 560px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48929\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48929\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/star-trek-marshmallow.jpg\" alt=\"Image: StarTrek.com\" width=\"550\" height=\"350\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-48929\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Image: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startrek.com\/article\/star-trek-collectibles-get-sweeter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StarTrek.com<\/a><\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>With<\/em> attached fork and spoon, no less. Because, you know, you wouldn\u2019t want to eat your marshmallows with your <em>hands<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Fans would have to wait for the direct market, decades later, to bring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/startrek.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Star Trek<\/em> collectibles online<\/a> that worthily represented the original <em>Trek<\/em> cast\u2019s motion pictures. Companies like Diamond Select, with its Khan action figures and Klingon disruptor replicas, Eaglemoss Publications, with its starship die-cast vehicles, and Bif Bang Pow!, with its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/hitlist.asp?theme=Star+Trek&amp;collect=Bobble+Heads&amp;searchorder=col&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=entertainment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Star Trek<\/em> bobble heads<\/a>, are now doing admirable jobs of filling in the gaps from this phase of <em>Star Trek <\/em>toy history.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, when <em>Trek<\/em> returned to television, it brought plenty of toys with it.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Coming in Part 3: The next generations of Star Trek toys!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>What\u2019s your favorite toy from the original Star Trek cast movie era?
