{"id":49108,"date":"2016-10-04T09:21:33","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T16:21:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/?p=49108"},"modified":"2019-08-30T10:45:04","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T17:45:04","slug":"6-batman-characters-who-need-live-action-movie-appearances-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/6-batman-characters-who-need-live-action-movie-appearances-now\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Batman Characters Who Need Live-Action Movie Appearances Now!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The news that Warner Bros.&#8217; upcoming <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/08\/30\/deathstroke-joins-the-dc-extended-universe\/\"><em>Justice League<\/em> movie will feature Deathstroke<\/a> (played by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/09\/15\/joe-manganiello-to-play-dcs-deathstroke\/\">Joe Manganiello of <em>True Blood<\/em> and the <em>Magic Mike<\/em><\/a> movies) means one more Batman character is making a big-screen debut.<\/p>\n<p>Given Deathstroke\u2019s popularity among so many comic book readers, it\u2019s a little surprising the supercharged mercenary hasn\u2019t already shown up on the silver screen. He\u2019s appeared in DC\u2019s animated universe three (count \u2018em, <em>three<\/em>) times (in the direct-to-video releases <em>Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths<\/em>, <em>Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox<\/em>, and <em>Son of Batman<\/em>), as well as in <em>Arrow<\/em>\u2019s third season, and even a 2010 episode of <em>Smallville<\/em>. Now that he\u2019s headed for a multiplex near you, he\u2019s bound to gain an even bigger following.<\/p>\n<p>The conjunction of Deathstroke\u2019s big movie break and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/09\/14\/batman-day-toys-and-collectibles\/\">Batman Day 2016<\/a> got me thinking: What <em>other<\/em> denizens of Batman\u2019s world would I like to see join the DC Extended Universe?<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Clayface<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DC05000&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49110\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC05000lg.jpg\" alt=\"Clayface\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC05000lg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC05000lg-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Comics Appearance: <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #40 (June 1940)<\/li>\n<li>First Animated Appearance: \u201cDead Ringers\u201d (<em>The New Adventures of Batman<\/em>, 1977)<\/li>\n<li>First Live-Action Appearance: \u201cFeat of Clay\u201d (<em>Birds of Prey<\/em>, 2003)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several villains have used the \u201cClayface\u201d name, but all have the same shape-shifting powers. The best known <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DC05000&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\">Clayface<\/a> now is probably Matt Hagen (introduced in <em>Batman: The Animated Series<\/em> in 1992). Hagen was a horribly disfigured actor who gained his metamorphosing abilities when forced to consume an untested, addictive skin cream. (<em>Hate<\/em> when that happens!)<\/p>\n<p>With the right combination of cutting-edge CGI and stomach-turning squelches in the sound mix, a movie Clayface could be impressively disgusting.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Ventriloquist and Scarface<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DC04996&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49111\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC04996lg.jpg\" alt=\"Scarface\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC04996lg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC04996lg-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Comics Appearance: <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #583 (February 1988)<\/li>\n<li>First Animated Appearance: \u201cRead My Lips\u201d (<em>Batman: The Animated Series<\/em>, 1993)<\/li>\n<li>First Live-Action Appearance: none<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Ventriloquists are talented, but I find their acts kind of creepy. That\u2019s mostly thanks to one really weird <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=BBP05124&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\"><em>The Twilight Zone<\/em> episode<\/a> &#8211; but Arnold Wesker and his wooden dummy (carved from a tree where 313 criminals were hanged, no less) have a lot to do with it, too. It\u2019s hard to tell who\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DC04996&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\">the real puppet master<\/a> when this duo is running drug rings and gunning down those who get in the way.<\/p>\n<p>I imagine Andy Serkis playing the Ventriloquist, or at the very least voicing Scarface. The man\u2019s got a gift for bizarre character voices, and hearing him talk about Gotham\u2019s streets \u201cswimmin\u2019 in \u201cglood\u201d would be a glast\u2014uh, I mean, a blast!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Red Hood One<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DC0132&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49112\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC0132lg.jpg\" alt=\"Red Hood\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC0132lg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DC0132lg-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Comics Appearance: <em>Batman <\/em>(Volume 2) #0 (November 2012)<\/li>\n<li>First Animated Appearance: none<\/li>\n<li>First Live-Action Appearance: \u201cRed Hood\u201d (<em>Gotham<\/em>, 2015)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sure, he may look a little laughable. Is that half an oversized medicine capsule on his head, or what? But this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DC0132&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\">Red Hood<\/a> (not the original nom de crime of The Joker, and not the resurrected Jason Todd out for revenge\u2014several DC bad guys have used <em>this <\/em>nom de crime, too) is a terrorist deadly serious about robbing, bombing and burning Gotham into submission to his nihilistic philosophy.<\/p>\n<p>If played by a strong actor who\u2019s given a good script, this \u201cNew 52\u201d take on Red Hood could drive a Batman film every bit as socially relevant as any in Christopher Nolan\u2019s Dark Knight trilogy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Zatanna<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DCL13870&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49114\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DCL13870lg.jpg\" alt=\"Zatanna\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DCL13870lg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DCL13870lg-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Comics Appearance: <em>Hawkman <\/em>#4 (November 1964)<\/li>\n<li>First Animated Appearance: \u201cZatanna\u201d (<em>Batman: The Animated Series<\/em>, 1993)<\/li>\n<li>First Live-Action Appearance: \u201cHex\u201d (<em>Smallville<\/em>, 2009)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The glamorous illusionist who has inherited real magical powers from a long line of sorcerers and seers, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DCL13870&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\">Zee<\/a>\u201d taught Bruce Wayne how to escape from traps that might have held back even Houdini. She was slated to be one of the DC supernatural superheroes in director Guillermo del Toro\u2019s <em>Justice League Dark<\/em> movie, but that project has become\u2014<em>presto chango!<\/em>\u2014another direct-to-video animated feature, and del Toro has vanished from its helm.<\/p>\n<p>Still, with Marvel\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/08\/04\/doctor-strange-casts-a-spell-on-san-diego-comic-con\/\"><em>Doctor Strange<\/em><\/a> movie on the horizon, maybe we have reason to hope DC will one day pull a Zatanna movie out of its hat. Young female heroes from <em>The Hunger Games<\/em>\u2019 Katniss Everdeen to <em>Star Wars<\/em>\u2019 Rey and Jyn Erso are proving that female <em>and <\/em>male audience members alike will cheer for women and girls who take the lead in taking action! That\u2019s just what Carrie did when she decided to take on the mantle of Robin and sought out Batman\u2014finding him just in time to give him a much-needed edge in a battle against the Mutants wreaking havoc in the book\u2019s near-future, dystopian Gotham City.<\/p>\n<p>Equally handy with computers and a slingshot, confident and courageous, Carrie Kelly is the next Robin I want to see at the cinema. That\u2019d be aces.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Man-Bat<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DCL20154&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-49130\" src=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DCL20154lg.jpg\" alt=\"Man Bat\" width=\"500\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DCL20154lg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/DCL20154lg-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First Comics Appearance: <em>Detective Comics<\/em> #400 (<\/li>\n<li>First Animated Appearance: \u201cOn Leather Wings\u201d (<em>Batman: The Animated Series<\/em>, 1992)<\/li>\n<li>First Live-Action Appearance: none<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ve saved my personal favorite for last. Why no live-action Batman film has yet brought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=DCL20154&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=batmanday\">the tragedy of Dr. Kirk Langstrom<\/a> to the screen is beyond me (apparently Joel Schumacher considered and rejected it\u2014that\u2019s probably for the best). Inspired by the Dark Knight\u2019s example to invent a serum that would give him a bat\u2019s natural abilities, Langstrom instead ends up a grotesque hybrid of bat and human being\u2014sometimes a friend, sometimes a foe, but always on the brink of madness.<\/p>\n<p>Modern movie makeup on an outstanding actor could show us Langstrom\u2019s Jekyll-and-Hyde-like transformation in realistic and riveting ways. And having Batman challenge a twisted \u201creflection\u201d of himself opens up some potentially fascinating character insights.<\/p>\n<p><em>Which Batman villain who hasn\u2019t been in a live-action feature film would you most like to see onscreen, and why?
