If any holiday is a natural fit for creator Rod Serling\u2019s unique and often uniquely creepy blend of fantasy, horror and science fiction, it\u2019s Halloween<\/a>! What other time of year transports us so easily into (as the series\u2019 first season introduction phrased it) \u201cthe middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition\u2026 between the pit of man\u2019s fears and the summit of his knowledge\u201d?<\/p>\n For some unfathomable reason, recent years have seen May 11 designated \u201cThe Twilight Zone<\/em> Day.\u201d No one seems to know why. The series premiered on CBS on October 2, 1959. Only one episode originally aired on a May 11, and it\u2019s not generally regarded as one of the show\u2019s highlights (\u201cYoung Man\u2019s Fancy,\u201d in 1962). And Serling was born on a different holiday\u2019s date altogether – December 25, 1924!<\/p>\n So, submitted for your approval: Let\u2019s make October 31 \u201cThe Twilight Zone<\/em> Day\u201d! Stop asking about the jack-in-the-box.)<\/p>\n Serling gave pop culture one of its most enduring Christmas presents with \u201cNight of the Meek.\u201d This whimsical and warm script expresses his conviction that, as he says in his closing narration, \u201cthere\u2019s a special power reserved for little people.\u201d Holiday magic turns Henry Corwin from a drunken, down-on-his-luck department store Santa into the real thing. This color figure would make a great gift for that special someone on your \u201cnice\u201d list\u2014or, in the spirit of the episode and the season, even your \u201cnaughty\u201d one!<\/p>\n The Twilight Zone <\/em>featured several extra-strange extraterrestrials during its run\u2014the man-serving Kanamits, for example, and the hollow-eyed aliens who abduct Frisby\u2014but this Venusian kept a low profile in \u201cWill the Real Martian Please Stand Up?\u201d by keeping his third eye hidden under a soda jerk\u2019s cap. Appearances can be deceiving, especially<\/em> in The Twilight Zone<\/em>!<\/p>\n Hansen wasn\u2019t the main character in \u201cA Quality of Mercy\u201d\u2014that was Lieutenant Katell, played by future Quantum Leap<\/em> and Battlestar Galactica<\/em> star Dean Stockwell\u2014but Hansen was<\/em> played by Leonard Nimoy, three years before he put on Mr. Spock\u2019s pointed ears to film Star Trek<\/em>\u2019s first pilot. This World War II figure comes with a removable helmet, rifle, and field radio.
