{"id":52019,"date":"2017-01-10T17:12:08","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T01:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/?p=52019"},"modified":"2019-04-19T09:19:00","modified_gmt":"2019-04-19T16:19:00","slug":"3-big-questions-star-wars-rebels-mid-season-3-premiere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/3-big-questions-star-wars-rebels-mid-season-3-premiere\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Big Questions from Star Wars Rebels Mid-Season 3 Premiere &#8220;Ghosts of Geonosis&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>This article contains spoilers for Star Wars Rebels Season 3, Episode 12-13<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Star Wars Rebels<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is back from its holiday hiatus, and in a big way!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following up on \u201cThe Honorable Ones\u201d from season 2, \u201cGhosts of Geonosis\u201d takes our rebel friends back to the Galaxy Far, Far Away\u2019s second most important \u201cdust ball,\u201d where \u201cstupid sand gets everywhere\u201d (Sabine\u2019s complaint is a clever call-back to Anakin\u2019s similar gripe in <em>Star Wars:\u00a0<\/em><\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attack of the Clones<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). On Geonosis, they team up with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/12\/22\/get-to-know-rogue-ones-saw-gerrera\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saw Gerrera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to try and discover what secret weapon the Empire was, until recently, building. But when Imperial forces arrive, the investigation becomes a fight to survive &#8211; for not only Gerrera and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crew but also \u201cKlik-Klak,\u201d the sole surviving Geonosian. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"620\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/L0cP4ULXD58?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s seen <a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/12\/15\/review-rogue-one\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogue One: A Star Wars Story<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or who has read its prequel novel, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2016\/12\/08\/book-review-star-wars-catalyst\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catalyst<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, already knows the answer to this two-part episode\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">question. That \u201ccircle within a circle\u201d Klik-Klak draws isn\u2019t just a Geonosian egg or the Empire\u2019s \u201cgear\u201d logo; it\u2019s his best attempt at picturing a certain technological terror the Rebel Alliance will soon recognize all too easily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But \u201cGhosts of Geonosis\u201d still leaves viewers with questions, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1) So what in the world happened to Saw Gerrera?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2017\/01\/04\/6-post-rogue-one-wishes-for-the-rest-of-star-wars-rebels-third-season\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wondered whether we\u2019d have some idea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after this episode about the circumstances that led to Saw\u2019s partially robotic appearance in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogue One<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but he survives this adventure bodily intact. Still, given his tactics in the Geonosian tunnels, it\u2019s not hard to imagine himself causing his own injuries in the future. The explosion he set that took out those battle droids and that Droideka was mighty big and mighty close!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Saw stayed physically whole, \u201cGhosts of Geonosis\u201d shows us he\u2019s mentally and emotionally broken. His grief for his dead sister Steela threatens to consume him. It fuels such hatred for the Empire that, as Ezra points out, it\u2019s sometimes hard to tell whether Saw is any better than the enemy. (His torture of Klik-Klak, brief though it was, reminded me of the Inquisitor\u2019s torture of Kanan in season one\u2019s \u201cFire Across the Galaxy\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This time, optimistic Rebel spirit and noble Jedi philosophy kept Saw back from a moral abyss every bit as deep as the shaft in Geonosis\u2019 surface. But we know this freedom fighter will face darker times ahead. Whether <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars Rebels<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will tell those stories remains to be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2) Will we see more dissent within the Rebel Alliance\u2019s ranks?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogue One<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> did, \u201cGhosts of Geonosis\u201d presents viewers with an arguably more realistic view of the Rebellion than the original film trilogy ever did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator Bail Organa (voiced by Phil LaMarr, doing a dead-on Jimmy Smits impression) tells the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghost <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">crew that Alliance command decided to send them to Geonosis only \u201cafter some debate.\u201d And Hera and Kanan tell Ezra at the story\u2019s end that not all parties in the Alliance hold the same values or fight the Empire for the same reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike the Empire, the Rebellion doesn\u2019t strive for monolithic conformity. The diversity of its adherents\u2019 backgrounds and skills enrich it. Stories like \u201cGhosts of Geonosis\u201d and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rogue One<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remind us that diversity also presents challenges. People don\u2019t always agree about which goals are important, or how to go about achieving those goals. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This more nuanced depiction of the Rebel Alliance may feel, for now, more like something out of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Trek<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Star Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But ultimately, it enhances the believability of this fictional universe, and affirms that the benefits of diversity\u2014bringing down an Empire based on darkness and fear\u2014more than make up for its struggles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3) What happens to Klik-Klak?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.starwars.com\/tv-shows\/star-wars-rebels\/ghosts-of-geonosis-trivia-gallery\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the official episode guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebels <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creative team looked to writer-director Neill Blomkamp\u2019s movie<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> District 9 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2009) as a model of how to make \u201can insectoid alien\u2026 something other than creepy.\u201d They succeeded! Despite being saddled with a \u201ccutesy\u201d name (shades of Ahsoka in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Clone Wars<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 first season), Klik-Klak emerges as a highly sympathetic character. I\u2019d bet my last Republic credit we\u2019ll be seeing Klik-Klak action figures and bobble-heads before too long!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because I\u2019m also a fan of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/news\/2017\/01\/03\/jrr-tolkien-books-pop-culture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">J.R.R. Tolkien\u2019s Middle-earth books<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, I might have guessed the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rebels <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team was creating their very own <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.entertainmentearth.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=WT0877&amp;utm_source=ee-blog&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=product\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gollum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A small, physically repulsive subterranean dweller, obsessively concerned with a \u201cprecious\u201d object (those Geonosian queen eggs are \u201cvery rare,\u201d we\u2019re told), who lives only by the mercy of those more powerful than he.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saw Gerrera argues the rebels\u2019 mission takes precedence over Klik-Klak\u2019s life and the Geonosians\u2019 potential rebirth. Ezra and Kanan insist Klik-Klak and his race deserve a second chance at life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This argument reminded me of Gandalf\u2019s conviction, in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Lord of the Rings<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that Bilbo was right to spare Gollum in the tunnels beneath the Misty Mountains, all those years before:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was Pity that stayed his hand. Pity, and Mercy: not to strike without need\u2026 [D]o not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Fellowship of the Ring<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chapter 2<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, Klik-Klak is no villain, as Gollum ends up becoming (despite Frodo\u2019s best efforts to redeem him). But it\u2019s still interesting to contemplate what part, if any, Klik-Klak might have to play before all is said and done. As Kanan tells Saw, \u201cThe galaxy is full of surprises.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>What surprised you about \u201cGhosts of Geonosis\u201d?
