Darth Sidious wears the brown robes and black stole he wore while fighting Yoda in the Senate chamber, demolishing it in the process (a none-too-subtle visual metaphor for democracy’s destruction). Take off his hood, and you can see the self-appointed Emperor in all his evil glory. His accessories include the Sith’s signature red-bladed lightsaber and a lethal dose of Force lightning!<\/p>\n

The General Grievous figure was based on a figure from the Legacy Collection only the year before, but it earns the well-worn phrase “new and improved.” Hasbro kept the original figure’s multiple points of articulation, gave it new arms (which could still separate), and clothed it in a soft cloth cloak that boasted Grievous’ emblem on the back and, as in the film, pouches in the lining where the Droid Army commander stores lightsabers swiped from fallen Jedi. And while Anakin Skywalker thought General Grievous himself would be taller, this figure is one of the tallest 3 \u00be-inch Star Wars<\/em> action figures ever produced.<\/p>\n
Wave 3 Firsts<\/strong><\/h3>\n
The Vintage Collection’s third wave hit stores in November 2010, starring characters from the third movie (in release order), Star Wars:<\/em> Return of the Jedi<\/em>, including one figure that had never been seen in action figure form.<\/p>\n

In 1983, Kenner released a figure that looked a lot like this, calling him “Klaatu.” But according to Wookieepedia<\/a> – and far be it from me to not let Wookieepedia win – Klaatu and Wooof are two different characters from the same species, the Nikto. (See what confusion comes from production names that pay homage to classic science fiction films?)<\/p>\n
So Wooof became the first character from the original trilogy to make his action figure debut in the post-prequels era. But even if he couldn’t claim this distinction, he’d still be a cool toy. With ball-hinged head, shoulders, elbows and knees, swivel wrists and waist, and pivot hips, he’s incredibly poseable. Both his bandolier and helmet can be removed (the faux-fur skirt stays on – even the Nikto deserve their dignity), and he comes equipped with blaster and vibro-ax. Wooof wasn’t a bestselling figure, but he’s made many a collector’s heart stand still.<\/p>\n
Gamorrean Guard<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of Wave 3’s other highlights was a gorgeous Gamorrean Guard figure – if “gorgeous” can be applied to Jabba’s pudgy, piggy enforcers. (You won’t hear me <\/em>telling them otherwise!) Unlike Wooof, the Guard sold briskly, as troop builders often do, and remains notably elusive even after multiple re-releases. Clad in detailed armor, a soft goods skirt and a removable helmet and harness, the Guard can grip the vibrolance and the short- or long-handled ax it comes with. It’s not hard to see why the experts at Jedi Temple Archives picked the Gamorrean Guard<\/a> as The Vintage Collection’s #1 action figure.<\/p>\n
Classic Figures and More<\/strong><\/h3>\n
Originally slated for Wave 3, Wedge Antilles made his first non-exclusive single-carded release in April 2012 as part of Wave 4 instead.<\/p>\n

Although his body is kit-bashed from older figures, the new head sculpt – under a removable but very tightly fitting helmet – bears an impressive and immediately recognizable likeness of actor Denis Lawson. Maybe Hasbro’s new Vintage line will include an all-new figure for the only other Rebel pilot to survive the battles of both Death Stars!<\/p>\n
Captain Fordo<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, the card unimaginatively calls this June 2011 figure “ARC Trooper Commander,” but fans of director Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2003 Clone Wars<\/em> animated micro-series will recognize the clone leader who proved pivotal in the battles of Muunilinst, Hypori, and Coruscant.<\/p>\n
This figure is another example of a recycled body (in this case, the Vintage Collection’s Phase I Clone Trooper), but the red paint flashes denoting his rank set Fordo apart, as does his wide array of accessories. He comes with helmets from both Phase I and Phase II armor, as well as two blasters, a Phase 1 holster, a Phase II pauldron-holster combo, and a soft, gray-and-red kama.<\/p>\n
Fordo’s military prowess and distinctive appearance have made him a fan favorite, and clone enthusiasts seem to agree, this figure’s exceptional features more than make up for its lackluster card name!<\/p>\n

March Madness is long gone, but we\u2019ve got our own Final Four for you this Star Wars<\/em><\/a> day, May the Fourth: the final four entries in our top ten fan-favorite action figures from Hasbro\u2019s Vintage Collection!<\/p>\n
We’re celebrating Hasbro’s recent announcement of the Vintage Collection\u2019s revival next year by looking back at some of the standout figures from previous waves. Here are the last four figures to make our cut:<\/p>\n
Fan Favorite Characters<\/strong><\/h3>\nIs any Star Wars<\/em> character associated more with action figures than Boba Fett<\/a>? Since his toy debut in 1979 as the famed Kenner mail-away figure that didn\u2019t fire a missile as promised, the peerless bounty hunter in Mandalorian armor has been a consistent must-have for kids at play and collectors alike.<\/p>\n
Boba Fett (Prototype Armor)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Vintage Collection has seen four Boba Fett figures. This 2011 figure from Wave 8 was one of two available only by mail (5 UPC codes and $6.99 required). Unlike the other, but like the 1979 original, this figure didn\u2019t feature rocket-firing action, but proved more popular all the same.<\/p>\n
This Fett figure evokes the original concept for the character, an all-white armored look not seen on screen, apart from a 1978 test shot, until Star Wars Rebels<\/em><\/a>\u2019 third season<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Sticklers for detail point out that because the figure uses a Boba Fett mold from 2004, it\u2019s closer to an albino version of the costume seen in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back<\/em> than it is to Joe Johnston\u2019s vintage, unused design. Even so, with 15 points of articulation and a blaster rifle, grenade launcher, and removable jetpack as accessories, this figure deserves an honored place in any Boba Fett devotee\u2019s collection.<\/p>\n
Ponda Baba<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Walrus Man,” as Kenner called him back in 1978, has the honor of being the first (in film release order) of many Star Wars<\/em> characters to suffer a violent amputation. For his Vintage appearance in 2011, Hasbro capitalized on Ponda Baba\u2019s disarming claim to fame (rim shot and reader groans here)<\/em>, giving the figure a detachable ball-jointed right arm!<\/p>\n
Even better, he came with a “burned” (though unbloodied) arm stump – the better for creating his adventures immediately following his run-in with Ben Kenobi.<\/p>\n
Ponda also got an extra pair of flipper-like hands – a fun nod to a continuity gaffe in the cantina scene (an error, amazingly, left untouched in the Special Editions) – a blaster and bar glass, a screen-accurate costume, and, of course, his canonical name.<\/p>\n
All the fine and fun attention to detail make it easy to understand why Star Wars<\/em><\/a> fans like this Ponda Baba – even if he probably wouldn’t like them any more than he liked Luke.<\/p>\n
A Dark Side Duo<\/strong><\/h3>\n
We began our list with a pair of sinister Star Wars<\/em> characters; we end it that way, too. (Mostly – more in a bit.) But while both Darth Sidious and General Grievous appear in the films first, neither of these villains has shown up on the silver screen.<\/p>\n
Darth Malgus<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bioware’s massively popular MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic<\/em> introduced the world to Darth Malgus, a Sith Lord who fought the Republic some three millennia before the Battle of Yavin.<\/p>\n
An immediate hit with fans of the game when it launched in late 2011, Malgus made his way into The Vintage Collection the next April. Even on the 3 3\/4-inch scale, he cuts an intimidating figure, thanks to his bulk, his detailed suit of armor (the chest armor is removable), and his soft, flowing, hooded cloak. His piercing red gaze matches the crimson hue of his lightsaber, and the paint job on the rest of the meticulous head sculpt depicts the injuries he sustained on Alderaan. Those wounds forced him to rely on a respirator – foreshadowing the more extensive life-support equipment a future Dark Lord of the Sith would need, thousands of years later.<\/p>\n
Starkiller<\/strong><\/p>\n

Our last Vintage selection also comes from the world of Star Wars<\/em> video games: Darth Vader’s secret apprentice Galen Marek, better known by his codename “Starkiller” (an appropriation of Anakin’s and Luke’s original surname from early Star Wars<\/em> drafts that predates the First Order’s lethal weapon in Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/em>).<\/p>\n
Introduced in the late (and lamented) LucasArts’ 2008 game The Force Unleashed<\/em>, Starkiller initially used his extreme sensitivity to the dark side of the Force as Vader’s expert assassin. In time, however, he turned to the light and even (a long time ago, in a continuity far, far away) came to be honored as the original organizer of the Rebel Alliance.<\/p>\n
This Vintage Collection release, from June 2012, was Starkiller’s first solo carded appearance as an action figure. Although he isn’t as articulated as some exacting collectors would prefer – his lack of a ball-jointed waist and ball-hinged hips hurts his poseable possibilities – and his tunic is hard plastic rather than soft cloth, he bears an excellent likeness and comes with a generous ten accessories, including removable chest and back armor and gauntlets, and a pair of lightsabers.<\/p>\n
These figures get our votes for some of the best of The Vintage Collection past. We can’t wait to see who, in addition to the Rey figure announced at last month’s Star Wars Celebration<\/em>, the future will bring!<\/p>\n
