Whether you\u2019re a niche collector of vehicles or a generalist, Star Wars<\/em> fans everywhere were extremely excited when Hasbro revealed their most ambitious and awe-inspiring Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0vehicle yet. Masters of Star Wars<\/em> lore know it as the <\/span>Khetanna<\/span><\/i>, but anyone who’s ever seen Star Wars: <\/em><\/span>Return of the Jedi<\/span><\/i> will recognize it as Jabba’s Sail Barge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jabba’s Sail Barge isn’t on screen all that long in <\/span>Episode VI<\/span><\/i> – only about seven minutes pass from our first sight of it to its fiery destruction – but the big ship makes a big impression. Packed with the wildest assortment of partying aliens we’d seen since the Mos Eisley cantina, the huge hovership – just like its loathsome master – is strong and intimidating, but ultimately proves no match for Luke Skywalker’s master plan!<\/span><\/p>\n
The prototype on display in Hasbro’s Toy Fair showroom drew admiring onlookers all weekend long. Designed by Senior Principal Product Designer Mark Boudreaux from on-set photography, the Lucasfilm digital archives, and some imaginative extrapolation, the toy Sail Barge measures 49.35-inches long (just over four feet), 17.01-inches high (measured to the tip of its sails), and 14.64-inches wide, and weighs in at 13.89 pounds (about as heavy as a gallon of paint – depending on your physical fitness, you might get a workout trying to find the perfect spot in your collection).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Boudreaux and his team haven’t spared any effort crafting this Sail Barge, which they began working on fall of last year. There are fan-delighting details from stem to stern:<\/span><\/p>\n

The two-figure cockpit includes a full panel of navigation instruments, so you can plot the fastest round-trip route to the Great Pit of Carkoon.<\/span>

A sliding trap door separates the brig from the rest of the ship, so Jabba’s guests don’t have to listen to the screams of his chained and tortured prisoners, like that unfortunate Hammerhead whose shackled skeleton still adorns one wall. (Of course, guests still have to hear Salacious Crumb’s nerve-flaying cackles, so I’m not sure they come out ahead after all\u2026)<\/span>

Since sacrificing your enemies to the almighty Sarlacc can really work up the appetite, the Barge’s galley is equipped with a built-in sink and grill top. Barbecued bantha, anyone? <\/span>Bon app\u00e9tit <\/span><\/i>(or the Huttese equivalent)!<\/span>\f<\/span><\/li>\n
Should you find yourself being stormed by returning Jedi and self-liberated princess warriors, grab your laser guns from the armory’s storage racks, smuggling compartment, and repair bench. (You’re doomed anyway, but why not give it that old Imperial Academy try?)<\/span>

Enter the crime lord’s opulent inner sanctum, complete with working shutters and decorated with mounted trophy heads – is that a rancor on the back wall? – and furnished with a 3 3\/4-inch figure of Jabba himself, in all his corpulent magnificence. (You’ll find no younger, “slimmer,” Boonta Eve Jabba from Star Wars:\u00a0<\/em><\/span>The Phantom Menace<\/span><\/i> here, only the “slimy piece of worm-ridden filth” you know and love from <\/span>Return of the Jedi<\/span><\/i>.)<\/span><\/li>\n
The Barge is covered in defensive plating with removable side panels, which means you can stage some stunning battle dioramas. Two rotating cannons with 6 rail-mounted locations provide defense against all comers (save Force-users). And the soft goods, canopy-like sails catch Tatooine’s desert winds, gently propelling you toward your grim fate…<\/span><\/li>\n

The more you think about it, Jabba’s Sail Barge is the <\/span>Titanic <\/span><\/i>of Star Wars<\/em>. It’s on a voyage toward destruction – but it sails there in<\/span> spectacular style!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n
(It also reminds me of the <\/span>War Rocket <\/span>Ajax<\/span><\/i><\/a>, too, from the Flash Gordon universe. When will these big-time bad guys ever learn that flying luxury fortresses never reach happy destinations?)<\/span><\/p>\n

Hasbro’s Barge is certain to be, as Evans says, a “collection-defining” centerpiece – provided HasLab raises the money needed to commit to full production. The crowdsourcing platform needs to garner at least 5,000 pre-orders at $500 each by April 3, 2018, in order to make this breathtakingly impressive toy a reality. If you pledge the money you won’t be charged for the Barge immediately, instead, you will be charged the full amount as soon as the deadline passes in Spring 2018. A wise pilot once said, “Never tell me the odds”… but I think HasLab’s inaugural effort has a good shot at success. Why? Stuart Wells, writing in his book <\/span>A Universe of Star Wars Collectibles<\/span><\/i>, offers the clue: “Vehicles are much more important in <\/span>Star Wars<\/span><\/i> than in most other action figure lines. The 3 3\/4[-inch] size of the figures allowed the production of vehicles which were large enough to accommodate several figures, and so the larger vehicles became virtual playsets for the figures.”<\/span><\/p>\n
I’m a ’70s fan who vividly remembers playing with several ships Kenner produced. I rolled Luke Skywalker’s landspeeder across my bedroom floor. I popped the “solar panel” wings off a TIE fighter. And I hid Han and Chewie in the <\/span>Millennium Falcon\u2019s<\/span><\/i> smuggling compartment many times.<\/span><\/p>\n
And it’s not just first-generation fans who’ve had the pleasure of playing with vehicles during <\/span>the history of Star Wars toys<\/span><\/a>. The prequel era brought battle droid transports, Gungan submarines, Jedi starfighters, and more. And each new movie introduces modes of transport that make great toys, such as <\/span>Rey’s speeder<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>Star Wars: The Force Awakens<\/span><\/i>, the <\/span>U-wings<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>Rogue One: A Star Wars Story<\/span><\/i>, and <\/span>Kylo Ren’s TIE Silencer<\/span><\/a> from <\/span>Star Wars: The Last Jedi<\/span><\/i>. But nothing is as cool as Jabba’s Sail Barge.<\/span><\/p>\n
