As World War II was heating up, the United States Army attacked the challenge of fighting in cold mountain environments. Winter warfare required more than simply an additional phase of training, so a specialized division was created in 1943. Originally called the 10th Light Division (Alpine) until being renamed in 1944, the 10th MOUNTAIN DIVISION was put through intense training to make it combat ready for harsh mountain environments. An important part of their outfit is the overwhite outerwear that soldiers wear over their B.D.U. to camouflage them in the snow.

Today, the 10th MOUNTAIN DIVISION makes its home at Fort Drum, New York as the 10th MOUNTAIN DIVISION (Light Infantry). They have served in Desert Storm, provided disaster relief after Hurricane Andrew, and performed operations in Somalia, Mogadishu, Haiti and Bosnia. From their wintry beginnings to the present, the 10th MOUNTAIN DIVISION remains the force that can skillfully and bravely meet the challenges of extreme environments.
