In 1976, Lucasfilm went to San Diego's Comic-Con International to promote a little movie called Star Wars. Nobody ever heard of it, fans had no idea what a lightsaber would be, and star Mark Hamill was on hand to promote the then-mysterious unknown space movie due out a year later. In addition to fans getting a first glimpse at the project, they also were able to buy one of the first-ever pieces of Star Wars merchandise. A limited edition poster by comic book artist Howard Chaykin, who went on to adapt the film for Marvel Comics, sold for just $1. Featuring Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and of course Luke Skywalker, this scene captures the action and intensity of a movie that, at the time, the world had never seen.
Today, we celebrate that poster with a new sculpture inspired by Chaykin's original artwork. With the uniquely colored lightsaber, the bright yellow burst behind the Death Star, and the stylized renditions of the cast and the film's vehicles, this sculpture brings that classic piece of art to life.
